Autonomous colleges in Mumbai: India is home to more than 1,074 academic institutions that provide diploma, undergraduate, and graduate degrees in numerous specialised areas. These include the arts, commerce, humanities, fine arts, science, etc. The aforementioned institutions are divided into different groups, including Central, State, Private, Autonomous, and Deemed-to-be universities, based on the kind of education, mode of schooling, and curriculum they provide. For any Indian university to operate lawfully and grant degrees accepted by the University Grants Commission (UGC), it must first receive recognition. The UGC awards recognition to the colleges based on several factors and rigorous eligibility criteria. Private, Autonomous, Central, State, and Deemed-to-be accreditations are given to those universities that meet the specified requirements.

Autonomous educational institutions maintain autonomy over their everyday operations, curriculum, tuition fees, course programs, and admissions process. The Department of Higher Education (DHE), MHRD, has administrative authority over them. There are more than 70 autonomous colleges in Mumbai; among these, the University Grants Commission (UGC) recently added over 16 new autonomous colleges to its list, including four engineering colleges and conventional Science, Arts, and Commerce institutes. In 2024, around 6 MU-affiliated autonomous universities received empowered autonomy status, and the total number of autonomous institutions rose to 18. Although they are not called universities, certain autonomous colleges in Mumbai can grant degrees. Among these are the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and more.
