Chandigarh University Grading System

Chandigarh University has adopted a Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for grading where all students must complete all the credits to get a degree or certificate from the university. Under this Chandigarh University grading system, candidates have to complete both core and elective subjects along with internships, project work, practicals etc.

In order to rank the candidates, the marks secured in each credit, known as SGPA or Semester Grade Point Average, are added and divided by the total number of credits to provide the overall score, also known as Cumulative Grade Point Average or CGPA. Read the article given below to understand the complete Chandigarh University grading system.

Chandigarh University Grading System Overview

Chandigarh University has designed its evaluation system by keeping in mind the best available options of certification and assessment along with their global acceptability. The system is primarily more scientific, transparent and objective in comparison to older traditions of ranking students. 

Chandigarh University grading system takes two components to rank students which include the following:

• Internal Assessment: This includes two tests for a duration of one hour each, a surprise test, quiz, assignments, and tutorials.
• External Assessment: This includes the marks obtained in the final examination conducted at the end of the semester to assess a student's overall performance in the entire academic year.

Both GPA and CGPA are of numerical values and are then converted into grades that range from A+ to I. 

Chandigarh University CGPA Grading System  

Chandigarh University takes both internal assessment and external assessment marks into consideration at the evaluation. The marks allocated are as follows:

Chandigarh University grading system includes awarding all students with the letter grade at the end of the semester for each registered course, depending upon the total performance that consists of mid-semester exams, quizzes (announced and surprise), tests, lab tests, tutorials, home assignments, seminars, and end semester exams.

In the table given below, the letter grade along with the level of performance and grade point is presented for the purpose of calculating SGPA, AGPA and CGPA.

Note: 

• E Grade: This grade is given to a candidate who has attended 75% of the scheduled lectures of the subject, but is unable to appear in the end semester exam. In this case, students have to appear in the final exam of the relevant semester in the next academic year by paying the examination fees. However, students also have an option to get the grade based upon marks obtained in various internal assessments. 
• F Grade: This grade is given to a candidate who has attended 75% of the scheduled lectures of the subject, but has scored very low marks in the subject examination. In such a scenario, students have to reappear in the exam again in the relevant semester by paying examination fees.
• I Grade: This grade is given to a candidate who was unable to meet the attendance requirement of 75% scheduled lectures for respective subjects. In this situation, students are expected to register again for the course when offered in the relevant semester by paying the examination fees again for each paper.

How is Chandigarh University CGPA Calculated?

To calculate CGPA, Chandigarh University uses a formula, wherein all the SGPAs are added to get the overall cumulative score.

CGPA can be termed as the weighted average of all the grades given to the student since they joined the university and appeared for the first exam till the latest semester exam. 

CGPA =; Ci = Credits for ith paper Gi = Grade points of the grade earned in ith paper.

The following components are taken into account while computing CGPA:

• Marks obtained in the end semester university examination
• Total marks acquired (end semester university examination marks)
• Marks for internal assessment (for each course)
• Marks for external assessment 

Chandigarh University CGPA to Percentage Conversion 

At time of taking admission in foreign universities or at the time of applying for jobs, students need to convert their CGPA to percentage for which, Chandigarh University aids individuals by applying the formula given below:

Here we will use the 9.5 conversion factor using which we have to multiply the CGPA of a student with 9.5.

For example: 

If a student holds a CGPA of 8 on a 10-point scale, then, 

                             8 x 9.5 = 76%

Therefore, the student's CGPA equivalent in percentage is approximately 76% which according to Chandigarh University grading system will be given a letter grade of Grade ‘B’ which stands for ‘Good’.

Chandigarh University Grading System Promotion Criteria 

There are various conditions for promotions to next year as well as for year back for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by Chandigarh university. The detailed promotion criteria is as follows.

For Undergraduate Courses:

• Students who have secured a CGPA of more than 3.5 or more or has attained 40% of the credits offered in the first year at the time of the end of first year shall be eligible for promotion.
• Similarly, at the end of second year, all those students who have secured a CGP of greater than or equal to 4.50 or has achieved 40% of the credits offered during the first and second year will also be promoted to the next year.
• Students who have taken admission through lateral entry will be treated as second year students.
• Students who will be unable to meet the minimum requirement of CGPA will lose one year.

For Postgraduate Courses:

• At the time of first year, students who have obtained a minimum required CGPA of 4.50 or have earned a minimum of 40% credits of the first year are eligible for promotion.
• Students who will not be able to meet the CFPA requirements will lose one year. 

In order to get a degree or certificate of completion, students are required to complete all the requirements of their course. Moreover, for undergraduate courses, the minimum CGPA to earn a degree must be greater than or equal to 4.50. For postgraduate courses., the minimum CGPA to be eligible to get a degree must be greater than or equal to 5.0.
