Formed in 1984 under a parliamentary act - The Dentists Act (XVI of 1948), the Dental Council of India, commonly known as DCI is a statutory body. The DCI regulates the profession of Dentistry and Dental Education all around the country. The organisation is financed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Dept. of Health) of the GOI (Government of India) through Grand-in-aid.

As per the current data, there are 259 MDS colleges, 313 BDS colleges, 9 PG-DIP colleges and 110 DH/ DM colleges under the Dental Council of India. The number of seats permitted by the DCI for the MDS course is 6,228 and 26,949 seats for the BDS course at dental colleges in India.
