The Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons. Music) programme lasts three years. The course requires 10+2 and intermediate clearance. The course fees for a three-year Bachelor of Arts, BA (Hons) Music programme range from INR 1,000 to 50,000. Admission to such courses is based on counselling after passing entrance exams or other criteria determined by the colleges. Graduates of this programme have the opportunity to work in industries such as the Commission of Fine Arts, Cultural Affairs, Department of Education, Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Archives, National Capital Arts and Cultural Affairs, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, NJ Department of Education, Office of International Education, Peace Corps/AmeriCorps, Smithsonian Institution, Travel and Tourism Department, Indian Idol, Bollywood.

This programme is intended to provide students with an understanding of the origins, development, and historical context of Hindustani music in both vocal and instrumental forms. This course helps students understand and compare various aspects of the prescribed ragas, as well as demonstrate the scales, ragas, and compositions. Furthermore, it aims to provide learners with the ability to perform and present ragas on stage, as well as gain knowledge and understanding of the positive role of music in personality development.

Hindustani Music: Vocal/Instrumental (Sitar/Sarod/Guitar/Violin/Santoor) Eligibility for Admission

Eligibility for a Specific Program

Candidates must take both the CUET and the Performance-based test. Candidates must take CUET in any of the subject combinations listed below:

  • Combination I: Any one of the languages from List A + one of the performing arts from List B2 + any two subjects, one of which must be from List B1

OR

  • Combination II: Any one of the languages from List A + any two subjects from List B1 + any one of the subjects from either List B1 or List B2

And

Performance-Based Evaluation

  • The 'Combined CUET score (50 percent weightage) and Performance-based test score (50 percent weightage)' will be used to calculate merit
  • The CUET score will be the best score obtained from any of the above-mentioned subject combinations

2. BA (Hons) - Karnataka Music: Vocal / Instrumental (Veena/Violin)

This course aims to develop an in-depth understanding of music by studying scales from various systems such as Karnatak, Hindustani, Ancient Tamil Music, and Western music. It also focuses on providing a venue for participants to engage in the details of various musical forms and ragas (theory and practice). Students will gain an understanding of musical history and its distinguishing features, as well as knowledge of aesthetical elements contained in terms of Indian musicology such as swara, Nada, Sruti, Gamaka, Raga, and Tala, among others. They will also gain an understanding of the significance of "Mahageetak" and "Dhruva Gana" and their relationship to classical music.

Admission to the BA Program (Hons) Music from Karnataka-Vocal/Instrumental (Veena/Violin)

Eligibility for a Specific Program

Candidates must take both the CUET and the Performance-based test. Candidates must take CUET in any of the subject combinations listed below:

  • Combination I: Any one of the languages from List A + one of the performing arts from List B2 + any two subjects, one of which must be from List B1

OR

  • Combination II: Any one of the languages from List A + any two subjects from List B1 + any one of the subjects from either List B1 or List B2.

3. BA (Hons) - Hindustani Music: Percussion (Tabla/Pakhawaj)

The main goal of the course is to gain a better understanding of Percussion Music-Tabla/Pakhawaj, Prachalit Talas, the Hindustani Music Notation System, and musical instruments from South East Asia, Central Asia, and Europe. The course is more practical in nature, with relevant theory thrown in for good measure. It assists students in acquiring theoretical and practical skills and ideas about the chronological development of Tabla/Pakhawaj and their Playing techniques, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of Percussion Music-Tabla/Pakhawaj.

Admission to BA (Hons) Hindustani Music: Percussion (Tabla/Pakhawaj)

Eligibility for a Specific Program

Candidates must take both the CUET and the Performance-based test. Candidates must take CUET in any of the subject combinations listed below:

  • Combination I: Any one of the languages from List A + one of the performing arts from List B2 + any two subjects, one of which must be from List B1

OR

  • Combination II: Any one of the languages from List A + any two subjects from List B1 + any one of the subjects from either List B1 or List B2

And

Performance-Based Evaluation

  • The 'Combined CUET score (50 percent weightage) and Performance-based test score (50 percent weightage)' will be used to calculate merit

DU BA (Hons) Music Eligibility Criteria

Students will have to meet certain criteria in order to take admissions in the BA (Hons) offered by the University of Delhi. These criteria are declared by the designated authority which coordinates the process of admission. Candidates are advised to go through the eligibility criteria in detail before proceeding with the application procedure.

Candidates are required to pass their intermediate-level examination from any of the recognized boards with a minimum aggregate of 45%. It is necessary for them to have music as a compulsory subject in their best of 4.

There are certain other criteria which have to be matched by the students in order to take admissions:

  • Candidates who have not qualified in their last examination with music as a compulsory subject and seek admission in the DU BA Music courses are required to have learned music for not less than a time span of 3 years from any of the recognized institutions

  • Students who have learned music from an institution or a guru are required to submit a certificate issued by that particular or the guru

  • The aggregate marks are calculated on the basis of one language (elective/core) and three more subjects including music

DU BA (Hons) Music Admission Process

Candidates should be aware of the admission process of DU BA (Hons) Music Courses. The admission is done on the basis of merit. Candidates are required to fulfill the cut-off declared by different colleges for the particular course. The Delhi University conducts an entrance examination (CUET) for admission to the Music courses. Candidates who crack this entrance are called for the selection process. Some weightage is given to the marks scored by the students in their +2 level as well. Once the students get selected, they are eligible to proceed further.

Though the admission is not considered to be complete until the payment of the college fees. It is to be noted that a candidate can only get admission to one college at a time.

DU BA (Hons) Music Seat Matrix
