Situated in one of the most beautiful cities in India, Telangana, English and Foreign Languages University [EFLU] is a central university. The university was established in 1958 as the Central Institute of English (CIE). It has two regional campuses apart from one main campus in Hyderabad: one in Lucknow and another in Shillong. English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) was established with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's (India's first Prime Minister) goal of establishing a facility to provide teachers with high-quality English language education. With the addition of three significant foreign languages—German, Russian, and French—it was renamed the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) in 1972. The university has been accredited with the NAAC A grade. 

The university has a total of 7 schools and 26 departments at present. EFLU courses are available at the undergraduate, postgraduate, PG diploma, and research levels. Apart from regular courses, some of the EFLU courses are also offered through distance learning. The foreign language courses are offered in part-time mode. EFLU has a total of 187 full-time faculty and 1800 students. This means that there is one faculty member for every 9-10 students. This ratio is slightly higher than the recommended faculty-to-student ratio of 1:20 by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. However, it is important to note that EFLU is a specialised university with a focus on languages, which can require more faculty resources.

Even if we ignore the higher faculty-to-student ratio, there are other things about EFLU that need to be considered. If the review of students on Quora is to be believed, the standard of the courses isn't great at EFLU. Also, most of the courses still follow the traditional curriculum and are not updated regularly.

This is a significant achievement, given the large number of universities in India. The NIRF ranking is a comprehensive ranking system that takes into account a variety of factors, including teaching quality, research output, student satisfaction, and graduate employability. The fact that EFLU has performed well in all of these areas is a testament to its overall quality.

EFLU Academia & Batch

Curriculum Design

The EFLU courses are divided into semesters, where each semester is for a total of 12 credits. If foreign languages and multidisciplinary courses are included, each semester holds 18 credits overall. The last semester also consists of a dissertation, which is a total of 10 credits.  Apart from this, the bridge courses are 4 credits, and internships are 6 credits overall.

Academic Evaluation

EFLU conducts exams after each semester. For each semester, there are two major exams: mid-semester exams and end-semester exams. Apart from this, regular class assessments and project marks are also added to the final score. EFLU offers a total of 2 courses at the UG level and 2 courses at the PG level. Apart from this, EFLU also offers part-time language proficiency courses (Arabic, French, Italian, Chinese, Persian, and Korean) in part-time mode.

Admission Process

EFLU admission to UG courses is done either on the basis of merit in the qualifying exam or performance in the CUET UG entrance exam. Meanwhile, admission to PG courses is done either on the basis of merit in the qualifying exam or performance in the CUET PG entrance exam. Admission to part-time and distance courses is done directly on the basis of merit in the qualifying exam.

However, the students have complained on Quora that courses at EFLU adhere to the traditional curriculum and are not updated regularly. This is a major drawback when it comes to EFLU academics because the university is not keeping up with the latest trends and developments in its field. This could make it difficult for students to learn the skills that they need to be successful in the modern workplace.

EFLU Infrastructure

Classroom:

All classrooms are equipped with projectors, screens, and sound systems. EFLU classrooms also have smartboards and other interactive technology. Classrooms are spacious and well-lit, with comfortable seating for students.

Auditorium/ Seminar Halls:

Labs:

Internet:

EFLU provides free Wi-Fi internet access to all students and staff. The internet speed is fast and reliable. Students can access the internet from anywhere on campus, including their classrooms, hostels, and the library.

Hostel:

The university offers hostel accommodations to anyone who is not a resident of Hyderabad. On campus, there are five separate hostels. Indian students have three hostels (one for men and two for women), whereas foreign students have two, one for boys and one for girls. The mess and the canteen are the two dining options at the university. The mess charge is normally between INR 2,000 and INR 2,500 each month. Every week, a wide range of foods are made. Non-vegetarian products, on the other hand, are limited to three meals each week.

Cafe/ Hang-out:

EFLU has a number of cafes and hang-out spots where students can relax and socialise. These facilities offer a variety of food and drinks, as well as comfortable seating and free Wi-Fi.

Our Take

The infrastructure for EFLU seems fine. The classrooms, auditoriums, labs, library, internet, hostels, and cafes are all well-equipped and well-maintained. However, students on Quora have shared that the campus of EFLU is smaller and there are not many things for students on campus. This comes as a disappointment for students in a city that is home to several bigger campuses, such as Anurag University, University of Hyderabad, etc.

Even though we are impressed with the top companies that visit EFLU for placements, the placement percentage is something that disappoints us. Since we talked about the curriculum not being updated at EFLU regularly, the low placement might be because the curriculum may not be teaching students the skills that employers are looking for, or it may not be updated regularly to reflect the latest trends in the job market. The median salary offered by EFLU seems fine for courses like BA, but it surely needs to work on the percentage of placements offered.
