GATE 2023 Civil Engineering Exam Pattern
The GATE 2022 Civil Engineering exam was conducted for a total of 3 hours duration in the online mode (computer-based test). The question paper will consist of a total of 65 questions divided into 3 sections: General Aptitude, Mathematics, and Civil Engineering subject. The questions will be of MCQs, MSQs and NAT.
The General Aptitude section is same for all the candidates of the exam. The General Aptitude and Mathematics consist of 15% of total marks each in the exam while the Civil Engineering consist of 70% of total marks in the exam. There is no negative marking for the numerical questions in the exam. 1/3rd and 2/3rd marks will be deducted for incorrect MCQ answers for questions carrying 1 and 2 marks respectively.

Types of Questions Asked in GATE 2023 Civil Engineering Exam
The General Aptitude and Mathematics section in the GATE 2023 exam will consist of MCQ and numerical type questions. For the MCQ type questions, the candidates will have to choose one correct option among the four options available for each question. Meanwhile, for the numerical type questions, the candidates will have to enter the integer value in the space for the answer.
All in all, the GATE 2023 exam will consist of the following types of questions in the exam:
Comprehension: These questions will consist of fundamental ideas about the Civil Engineering topics from which the candidates will have to draw a simple conclusion.
Recall: These types of questions will be based on the formulas or facts of various concepts for which the candidates will have to perform one line computations, substituting the formula learnt.
Application: These types of questions are logical reasoning or computation based questions.
Analysis: The candidates will have to analyse the given data in the question to draw out the conclusion based on the synthesis.
Linked Answer Questions: For such questions, the candidates will have to formulate a problem statement based on which, 2 to 3 linked questions can be answered. These types of questions will consist of 2 marks each.
Common Data Problems: For CDP, various problems will be linked with common data based on which, there can be a separate and unique solution for each question. These types of questions will consist of 2 marks each.
