GATE Physics (PH) Syllabus 2024 – Chapter-wise Weightage

As per the GATE 2024 Exam Pattern of Physics, the General Aptitude section carries 15% weightage while the core Physics section contributes to 85% of the total weightage. However, the weightage given to some of the core Physics topics tends to change each year. On the basis of the previous years’ paper analysis, we have compiled the section-wise GATE Physics 2024 weightage that will help the students with their exam preparation.
SectionsNumber of QuestionsWeightage Percentage
Quantum Mechanics9-1114-16
Electromagnetic Theory8-1011-13

Classical Mechanics5-78-10
Mathematical Physics5-78-10
Nuclear and Particle Physics4-67-9
Electronics4-67-9
Atomic and Molecular Physics4-67-9

Going by the above analysis, the following points must be noted –
  • Around 9-11 questions carrying a weightage of approximately 14-16% can be expected from Quantum Mechanics, followed by Electromagnetic Theory and Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics.

  • Around 5-7 questions may be asked each from Solid State Physics, Classical Mechanics, and Mathematical Physics.

  • The least weightage (7-9%) is given to chapters, such as Nuclear and Particle Physics, Electronics, and Atomic and Molecular Physics.
