Gravitation Weightage in JEE Main 2025: The physics chapters occupy prime significance in the JEE Main exam. The JEE Main aspirants are required to prepare for all the subjects in a perfect manner. JEE Main 2025 aspirants must be aware of the chapter-wise weightage for each subject for effective preparation. Some topics with high weightage in the physics syllabus are Motion and Equilibrium, Mechanics, Master Forces etc. whereas chapters such as Gravitation carry a weightage of minimum 2 questions (2%) in the JEE Main 2025 Exam. Though the weightage of Gravitation may seem small, but it is often covered under the broader sections of Mechanics, and its Concepts are necessary for solving the problems related to Circular Motion, Planetary Motion, and Satellite Dynamics. Candidates can check the weightage of the Gravitation chapter of JEE Main here in the article.

An Overview of Gravitation

Gravitation, as defined by Sir Isaac Newton, refers to the force of attraction between any two objects with mass. This force, which is invisible, is immensely powerful, capable of holding together galaxies and shaping the very fabric of spacetime. The strength of gravitational attraction is dependent upon the masses of the objects involved and the distance between them. For instance, consider two particles of masses m1 and m2 are positioned at a distance ‘r’ apart. If the force of attraction operating between them is F, then according to Newton’s law of gravitation, we have:

The proportionality constant G is referred to as the ‘gravitational constant’. Its value is the same for all pairs of particles in the universe. Therefore G is a ‘universal constant’. Although Newton's law of gravitation applies strictly to particles (point masses), it can be applied to extended objects as well, provided the sizes of the object are small compared to the distance between them. For instance, the moon and the earth are located far enough from each other so that, to a good approximation, we can treat both bodies as point masses and apply the law of gravitation. Spherically symmetric bodies tend to attract external particles as if their entire mass were concentrated at their centres of mass. Therefore the law of gravitation can be applied to them, irrespective of whatever their size be.

Gravitation - Key Concepts

  • Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation - Every mass attracts every other mass with a force which is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centres.
  • Geostationary and Polar Satellites - Fundamental concepts related to the orbits of satellites and their applications.
  • Gravitational Field and Potential - The concept of gravitational field strength and gravitational potential energy, and their relation to work done in moving a mass in a gravitational field.
  • Orbital Mechanics - The motion of planets and satellites, comprising the derivation of Kepler’s laws, and understanding of escape velocity and orbital velocity.
  • Acceleration due to Gravity - Deciphering how gravity varies with altitude, depth, and latitude, as well as its value on the Earth's surface.
  • Energy Considerations - Calculations comprising potential energy, kinetic energy, and total energy in gravitational fields, especially for satellite motion.

Type of Gravitation Questions in JEE Main 2025

Gravitation is a key concept in Physics and appears regularly in the JEE Main exam, both directly and as well as part of multi-concept problems.

  • Gravitation questions frequently asked in JEE Main involve calculations related to gravitational force, potential energy, and satellite motion.
  • JEE Main gravitation questions can also assess one’s understanding of how gravitational forces affect planetary and satellite motion.
  • Some JEE Main gravitation questions can integrate concepts from other topics such as Circular Motion, Work-Energy Theorem, as well as Electrostatics because of the similarities in the inverse-square law.
