Relationship Between JEE Main Marks vs Rank vs Percentile
- JEE Main Marks: These are the raw marks you score in the JEE Main exam. The maximum marks for each subject (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) is 100, and the total maximum marks for the exam is 300.
- JEE Main Rank: This is your rank relative to all other candidates who -ok the exam. The lower your rank, the better your performance.
- JEE Main Percentile: JEE Main percentile scores are scores based on the relative performance of all those who appear for the examination. The marks obtained are transformed into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees. The JEE Main percentile score indicates the percentage of candidates that have scored equal to or below that particular Percentile in that examination. Therefore the topper (highest score) of each session will get the same Percentile of 100 which is desirable. The marks obtained in between the highest and lowest scores are also converted to appropriate percentiles.

Why NTA Releases JEE Main Result in Percentile?
NTA releases JEE Main results in percentile instead of raw marks. There are different reasons for this. JEE Main is conducted in multiple sessions throughout the year. Each session might have variations in difficulty level due to different question sets. Percentile scores normalise these variations, ensuring a fair comparison of performance across sessions. Apart from this, in any JEE Main session, a few exceptionally high scoring candidates can inflate the perceived difficulty of the exam. Percentiles mitigate this effect by focusing on relative performance within the specific group of test-takers. Also, any engineering colleges use JEE Main percentiles for admissions, not raw marks. Releasing results in percentile directly aligns with the criteria used by colleges, simplifying the admission process.
