JEE Main 2025 Normalization - The National Testing Agency (NTA), the conducting body for the national-level Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE Mains) will release the JEE Main 2025 result in the form of percentile scores. The JEE Main percentile scores are calculated using the normalization formula and based on the percentile scores of candidates, the JEE Main Rank List 2025 is prepared. The normalization procedure in JEE Mains is used to ensure fairness in the evaluation process for students taking the JEE Main 2025 exam on different dates and shifts. The procedure involves adjusting scores to account for variations in difficulty between different exam sessions. Candidates who might be interested to know how the percentile scores are determined with the help of the JEE Main 2025 Normalization process can check this article for more details.

LATEST - JEE Main 2025 Notification is Released along with JEE Main Session 1 Application Form and Syllabus at jeemain.nta.nic.in

Importance of Normalization Procedure based on Percentile Score for Upcoming JEE Main 2025

JEE Main 2025 Session 1 Date is released at jeemain.nta.nic.in. JEE Main 2025 January Session Exam dates are between January 22 and 31, 2025. Since the exam is conducted on multiple dates and shifts, the question papers in different sessions may have slightly different levels of difficulty. However, the JEE Main syllabus 2025 will be the same for all sessions. Despite NTA’s efforts to hold an equivalent difficulty level for all sessions of the JEE Main 2025 exam, some of the candidates may attempt a more difficult question paper when analogized to other sets. Hence, these students attempting the tougher shift will end up scoring lower marks in JEE Main 2025 than the candidates who tried an easier question paper.

To provide justice to the candidates who attempted a difficult question paper, NTA uses a normalization procedure based on JEE Main percentile scores so that the candidates are neither benefited nor disadvantaged. The true merit of the candidate can be identified through the normalization procedure. Therefore, NTA compiles JEE Main 2025 scores for multiple session question papers through a normalization procedure based on the JEE Main 2025 percentile scores.

What is the Normalization Procedure?

The normalization process in examination results refers to the practice of adjusting scores to account for variations in difficulty between different exam papers or test sets. This is done to ensure fairness and consistency in grading or ranking. Normalization may involve statistical techniques to adjust scores and ensure that the final grades accurately reflect the performance of the students relative to the difficulty of the exam. It is important to note that the specific methods and policies for normalization can vary between educational institutions and examination boards.

The normalization process thus aims to address any discrepancies in the difficulty level of different exam papers or test sets. It is based on the assumption that not all exams or test sets are equally challenging, and therefore, it would be unfair to directly compare raw scores without taking into account these differences.

JEE Main 2025 Normalization - Step-by-Step Procedure

The normalization procedure aims to ensure that no student is disadvantaged due to the variation in difficulty. The process involves the following key steps:

  • Session-wise Percentile Calculation: First, the raw scores obtained by students in each session are converted into percentile scores. The percentile indicates the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below a particular score. This step is performed separately for each session.

  • Calculation of Percentile Scores: The percentile scores are calculated using a formula that takes into account the number of candidates who appeared for the exam in that session, as well as their relative performance. The formula used for this calculation is not disclosed publicly.

  • Percentile Normalization: After calculating the percentile scores for each session, the next step is to normalize these scores across all sessions. This is done to account for any differences in the difficulty level of the question papers. The normalization process ensures that the scores are comparable across sessions.

  • Calculation of Overall Percentile: Once the normalization is complete, the percentile scores from different sessions are merged to calculate the overall percentile for each candidate. This overall percentile is the basis for ranking the candidates.

What is the Percentile in JEE Main 2025?

In the JEE Mains exam, the percentile score indicates the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below a particular candidate's score. For example, if a candidate has a percentile score of 90, it means that they have performed better than 90% of the candidates who appeared for the exam. This percentile score is used to rank and compare candidates' performance in the exam.

JEE Main Percentile Score 2025 - Key Highlights

  • The percentile scores in the JEE Main exam refer to the normalized scores and not the raw scores of a candidate

  • The JEE Main percentiles will also be determined and converted for the marks obtained between the highest and the lowest scores

  • The JEE Mains percentile score indicates the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below a particular percentile (raw scores) in JEE Main. This means the JEE Main topper of each session will get the 100th percentile.

  • The JEE Main percentile scores will be calculated up to 7 decimal places to avoid tie-breaking and the bunching effect

  • The JEE Main Merit List 2025 is prepared based on the percentile scores of candidates in the exam

  • The overall percentile is not the same as the percentile aggregate of each subject

Highest Raw Score and Percentile Score

For each session in which the applicants attended, their highest raw score will be normalized to a 100 percentile score. For each session, the highest raw results will be turned into normalized percentile scores of 100.

Lowest Raw Score and Percentile Score

The total number of candidates taking the exam for each session is used to calculate the lowest raw score. For the lowest raw score, the JEE Main 2025 percentile score is different.

How to Calculate Percentile Score in JEE Mains 2025?

The following credentials are required for calculating the percentile in JEE Main 2025 –

  • Total number of candidates who appeared in any one session of JEE Main 2025 exam

  • The highest raw score of a candidate in that session of JEE Main 2025

Note: The JEE Main percentile score secured by a candidate will be different from the raw score. The percentile score is not similar to the percentage of marks obtained by a candidate.

The percentile in JEE Main 2025 is Calculated As Per the Formula Given Below –

100 multiplied by the total number of candidates who appeared in a particular session of JEE Main 2025 exam with the raw score less than or equal to the candidate who scored the highest raw score divided by the Total number of candidates who appeared in that particular session.

Example 1

In JEE Main 2025, 4 marks are awarded for each correct answer while 1 mark is deducted for each wrong answer. JEE Main 2025 exam will have 90 questions for 360 marks. The marks secured by candidates out of 360 shall not be considered for preparing ranks. The marks secured by candidates will be transformed into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 through the normalization procedure. Check the example below –

Let us assume that the JEE Main 2025 exam was conducted in four sessions and the highest and lowest score of the candidates is as follows –

Session

Highest Raw Score Secured by a Student

Total Number of Candidates Appeared for the Exam

Total Number of Candidates who Scored Equal to or Less than the highest raw score of a candidate

Percentile of the Student who Scored Highest Marks

Explanation (Apply the Above Formula)

Session 1

335

28,012

28,012

100 Percentile

(28012/28012) X 100 = 100

Session 2

346

32,541

100 Percentile

(40603/40603) X 100 = 100

From the above example, it is clear that a candidate who secures the highest raw score in each session will get the 100 percentile.
