KTU grading system involves assessing students’ performance for different courses with letter grades and not marks. The APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University or KTU adheres to UGC's suggested grading method whereby letter grades are assigned to learners. Students are evaluated based on their internal assessment and theoretical papers in the form of letter grades i.e. from A to F. The grades are given based on certain criteria and parameters adopted by the varsity to help students get an idea about their academic performance. Students are marked on a 10-grade points scale which ranges between 0 to 10. To enable them to learn about the meaning of letter grades, remarks are attached to the grades. Often results in the form of grades confuse students, so we suggest they convert their grade points into percentages for clarity. Easy Steps to Check Percentage from CGPA in KTU

As per the KTU grading system, students are evaluated with letter grades which often confuse them in analysing their performance. Converting CGPA into percentages can allow KTU’s graduates to gain clarity about the marks they secured. In fact, most universities or companies accept percentages when shortlisting candidates; hence, it is vital to learn the process of converting the grade points into percentages.

As per UGC guidelines, Kerala Technological University assigns CGPA or Cumulative Grade Point Average at the end of a semester in BTech programs. A CGPA refers to the average of students' grade points for all subjects included in the course. These grade points range between o to 10 and accordingly, letter grades are assigned by the institute.

To obtain a percentage from the CGPA or grade points, students can simply multiply their CGPA by 9.5. The formula for CGPA is:

CGPA= ∑(ci*GPi)/∑Ci

Where,

Ci= credit of a course

GPi= grade point of a course

Pros and Cons of KTU Grading System

The grading system is an integral part of any educational institution which involves assessing a learner’s performance through marks, percentages, or letter grades. In KTU’s grading system, letter grades are accompanied by remarks including outstanding, good, or average. To offer a brief insight into this grading method, we have listed some of the pros and cons of Kerala Technological University’s assessment system. Let’s explore:

Pros of KTU Grading System

  • The use of letter grades in judging a student’s performance reduces the performance pressure and encourages them toward a holistic performance.
  • The subject-wise grades along with remarks can offer valuable insight to the teachers about the earner’s grasp on the subject and open room for improvement.
  • Assessing students with the help of CGPA makes the evaluation system standardized and fair. It offers the right tool to compare them across institutions.

Cons of KTU Grading System

  • Marking students in letter grades might not serve the purpose of constructive feedback. Learners are unable to gain clarity about the areas where they need to work harder.
  • It fails to offer a right reflection of a student’s true potential. Those scoring 90 and above are all categorized as “O” or outstanding which somehow limits differentiating the top performers from the average ones.
  • The KTU grading system takes into account both theoretical as well as practical papers which reduces a sense of competition by making students feel less motivated.

Assessment Process Adopted by APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University

KTU grading system adheres to the UGC guidelines and the evaluation system is similar to that of other engineering colleges. The varsity uses a two-stage assessment method including theoretical internal assessment and practical internal assessment.

  • KTU Theoretical Assessment: The theoretical paper is of total 50 marks in KTU. Students need to appear for a 1-hour test for 20 marks along with a mini project which will carry 10 marks.
  • KTU Practical Assessment: The practical assessment paper has been divided into three categories including a practical record with outputs carrying 60 marks, a 10 mark viva, and a final practical that will be of 30 marks.

Other Components in KTU Assessment System

Besides theory and practical assessments, Kerala Technological University takes into account some components for evaluating students in the final semester that have been discussed below:

  • Comprehensive Evaluation: At Kerala Technological University, learners need to undergo a comprehensive test in their 6th semester. This exam courses oral and written tests, each carrying 50 marks.
  • Seminar: The seminars offer an opportunity for students to showcase their subject knowledge. Generally, it has been divided into three levels and their weightage are as follows:
    • Level 1: 30%
    • Level 2: 40%
    • Level 3: 30%
  • Design Project: The design project is another important stage of assessment whereby the team management skills of the learner are evaluated. It comprises two levels; the first level carries 40 marks while the next level is 60 marks.
  • Final Semester Project: It begins during the mid-way of the 7th semester and requires students to submit projects either individually or in groups.

KTU’s grading system, despite some of its cons, is certainly helping students get an idea about their course-wise performance. To reap benefits from the letter grades, students can convert them into percentages to analyze their scores with respect to the letter grades or grade points.
