Students can check out the last minute GATE 2025 exam preparation tips for Electrical Engineering below.

1. Don’t study new topics during the last few days

Many students make the mistake of picking new topics during the final days before the exam. This creates confusion and disrupts your exam preparation. Rather focus on going through what you have studied. Revise formulas and concepts.  If you do not wish to have any topic left at the last moment for preparation, plan your studies. While making your study plan add all the topics in it and don’t skip out any. By doing this, you will not have any topic or chapter from the GATE EE syllabus 2025 lest unstudies.

2. Do Continous Revision

Revision is the most important last minute preparation tip for the GATE Electrical Engineering exam. During the final days before the GATE exam you must plan out the complete syllabus revision. Make a chapter-wise formulae sheet for revision and go through it thoroughly. If you are forgetting any formulae or concepts make a note of it and revise daily.

  • After studying the GATE syllabus for Electrical Engineering, you should do a chapter-wise syllabus without skipping any topic. While doing the chapter-wise revision make short notes.
  • Prepare short such as they include all the basic ideas of the complete subject and include all the important formulas. Don't make the mistake of buying the short note prepare it on your own. When you prepare your own short notes you will make them as per your understanding and at the same time you will be revising the topics again.
  • You can use these short notes for revision when the GATE exam is just 1 or 2 days away. During your GATE exam day and 2 to 3 days before that it will not be possible to revise the complete syllabus. Short notes will come in handy on these days.

4. Attempt previous year papers, sample papers, and mock tests

One of the key GATE last minute preparation tips for Electrical Engineering is practicing with previous year papers and mock tests. GATE previous year question papers will help you analyze your preparation. You can get an idea about repeated topics of the GATE Electrical Engineering syllabus 2025. GATE previous year question papers and solutions and answer keys PDF will also assist you in knowing the high-wieghtage chapters. IIT Roorkee has GATE Electrical Engineering previous year question papers on its website at gate2025.iitr.ac.in under the download section. Solve last 15 years' GATE previous year papers of Electrical Engineering.

Along with that, do attempt the GATE mock tests 2025 available online. IIT Roorkee has released the GATE 2025 mock test free for Electrical Engineering that you can download. Practicing with the GATE mock tests will make you familiar with the GATE 2025 Exam Pattern, marking scheme, and section-wise weightage. Solve a full-length GATE mock test to know where you stand in your preparation and what are your shortcomings. Restudy those topics for which you got wrong answers in the mock tests. Improve your shortcomings whether it's solving MSQ-type questions, time management, poor paper-solving strategy, or anything else.

Also attempt the GATE test series, sample papers, and important questions that you find online. You have to dedicate your final days to practicing with the previous year papers, mock tests, sample papers, etc, and improving on your mistakes. Quick Link: GATE Sample Papers with Solutions and Answer Keys PDF

You might score low marks in previous year papers or mock tests but don't get anxious. The aim of solving these papers is to know your weaknesses and work on them.

5. Work on your weak points

By solving the previous year papers and mock tests you will get an idea about your shortcomings. During the final stage of your GATE EE preparation, you have to improve your shortcomings. Set aside extra time to work on these shortcomings, whether they are related to a particular topic or type of question. Addressing and conquering weaknesses will raise your confidence and guarantee that you come to the exam well-prepared.

Some of the common shortcomings that students face during GATE exam preparation are:

  • Poor time management skills
  • Forgetting formulas
  • Not able to remember the concept
  • Poor paper-solving strategy
  • Stress and anxiety

Tips on improving these weaknesses for GATE EE preparation.

  • Poor time management skills: This can be improved by practicing with mock tests and previous year's papers.
  • Forgetting formulas: You need to revise formulas daily. Make a list of subject-wise and chapter-wise formulas in an Excel sheet and go through them frequently. You can also note down all the formulas on chart paper and paste them in your room to go through them daily.
  • Not able to remember the concepts: If you are forgetting concepts you need to restudy these topics again.
  • Poor paper-solving strategy: Due to this, you might score less marks even knowing the answer. GATE paper is lengthy, so you need to solve fast. Firstly, answer those questions for which you are sure about the answer. Then move on to solving the answers that you find difficult. Some previous year toppers have recommended solving core paper first then General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics as your core section has higher weightage. And, General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics questions are not as lengthy as the core paper.
  • Stress and anxiety: Have faith in yourself. Don’t fall into peer pressure and compare your preparation with other students or friends.

6. Develop a Strategy for negative marking

The GATE 2025 Electrical Engineering exam will have negative marks for the wrong answers as per the exam pattern. For each 1-mark MCQ question, 1/3 mark will be deducted. For a 2-mark MCQ question, 2/3 marks will be deducted. However, there will be no negative markings in NAT and MSQ. This can be confusing for students. Many students don't develop a strategy for negative marking questions and just go sit for the exam. This leads to scoring or even failing the GATE exam.

The following tips will help you score better marks in the GATE 2025 exam and avoid negative marks.

  • Solve NAT and MSQ: While solving Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions and Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), you don't have to worry about negative marking. You should attempt all NAT and MSQ questions.
  • Prepare thoroughly: The best way to avoid negative marks in GATE 2025 is by studying for the exam well. If you have clarity of concepts and studied thoroughly you will be able to answer questions correctly and with certainty.
  • Skip questions with no knowledge: However, for MCQ questions where there is negative marking, skip out questions for which you have zero idea. Don’t attempt MCQ questions if you don't remember anything from them.
  • Don’t guess in MCQ: Avoid guessing answers without knowledge or explanation, as it might result in deductions of marks.
  • Analyze your confidence: Before answering MCQ questions, make sure you are confident that you know the answer. Instead of replying to them all, prioritize those with assured answers.
  • Attempt mock tests and previous year papers: This will help you practice for the exam and learn how to answer questions correctly which will automatically help you avoid negative marking.
