With the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, there have been a lot of major changes in the school and higher education level. These major changes have been implemented in terms of school and higher education curriculum, higher education programs, promotion of Arts & Culture and Language, teacher education and much more.

In order to implement these new changes introduced by NEP 2020, one of the fundamental steps is to make changes in teacher education so that the new teachers are prepared and trained as per the new curriculum & regulations. That is why, NEP 2020 has introduced some changes in teacher education including B.Ed, M.Ed and TET which will be discussed in the article below.

NEP 2020: Teacher Education

Teacher Education is a vital component of India’s education system which shape the future of the country. Teacher preparation is something which requires dispositions & values formation, multidisciplinary perspectives & knowledge, and development of learning practice under the mentors. That is why, it is important to for the future teachers to have extensive knowledge about the culture, traditions and other ideas so that they can provide better education to the students.

As per the NEP 2020, the teacher education in India is not up to the required effectiveness and quality, with most of the teaching education curriculum not contemplating serious education. Therefore, there will be an implementation of radial actions with the purpose of revitalising traditional teaching education and methods, restore integrity, improve the standards, efficacy,  credibility, and quality of the teacher education system.

NEP 2020 Changes in Teacher Education: Key Takeaways

Some of the key takeaways for changes in teacher education NEP 2020 are listed below:

  1. The regulatory system for teaching education will be responsible for taking stringent actions against the teacher education institutions (TEIs) who are dysfunctional and are not meeting the basic eligibility requirements, after one year of breach remedy. 

  2. All the multidisciplinary institutions will be required to establish teaching departments which will be responsible for carrying out cutting-edge research and also manage B.Ed programs including departments of Indian languages, psychology, sociology, philosophy, neuroscience, arts, history, music, literature, science, physical education, and mathematics. 

  3. The TEIs will have to convert to multidisciplinary instituted by the year 2030 and have to offer 4 years integrated teaching programme.

  4. The 4 years integrated B.Ed program offered by TEIs will be considered as the minimum qualification required to pursue a teaching career. 

  5. The 4 years integrated B.Ed programme will be considered as a dual-major holistic Bachelor’s degree in Education and different subjects of specializations including a language, music, history, mathematics, chemistry, economics, computer science, art, physical education, etc.

  6. Along with educating the students about cutting edge pedagogy, they will also be trained in terms of sociology, science, history, psychology, foundational literacy & numeracy, early childhood care, India and its values, art& traditions, etc.

  7. The TEIs can provide a 2 years B.Ed degree for the candidates who have acquired a Bachelor’s degree in any specialised subject. The candidates who have acquired 4 years UG degree in any specialised discipline may be given admission to 1 year B.Ed degree. The institutes will have to provide scholarship to the students for 4 years, 2 years and 1 year B.Ed degree.

  8. To ensure the availability of expert teachers in the relevant disciplines, the higher education institutions will have to network with the government & public schools where the students will teach the students and participate in community service, adult & vocational education, and other activities.

  9. For admission to pre-service teacher preparation programmes, there will be an entrance test conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) which will evaluate the knowledge of candidates in terms of Aptitude and specialised subject.

  10. Every new PhD admitted candidate will have to indulge in a credit-based course in education/writing/teaching/pedagogy in relation to their PhD subject opted. For PhD candidates, the major focus will be on pedagogical practices, credible evaluation systems, designing curriculum, communication, etc. in order to prepare them for a specific discipline.

  11. It will be necessary for the PhD candidate to indulge in actual teaching experience for a minimum hour duration which will be through teaching assistantships and other methods. For this purpose, the PhD programs for different institutions around the country will be reoriented.

  12. For the in-service continuous professional development of teachers, the online teaching raining platforms such as SWAYAM or DIKSHA will be enhanced and promoted in order to administer the standardised teaching programs to maximum candidates.

  13. A National Mission for Mentoring will be formulated and implemented with the purpose of providing short and long term mentoring support to the teachers and which will consist of experienced senior faculty members, including the person who can teach in Indian languages.

Impact of NEP 2020 Changes in Teacher Education

With the implementation of changes in Teacher Education by NEP 2020, the quality and effectiveness of teacher education will greatly enhance. These changes will also improve the quality of training provided to the teachers and will improvise the credibility and integrity required to restore the teaching profession’s prestige.

As per the regulations of NEP 2020, only teaching institutions which are multidisciplinary, educationally sound, and has integrated teacher education programmes will remain to function by 2030.

This will also impact the future of the country as the future teachers will be properly trained and capable of providing quality education to the schools and higher education institutions.
