Over the last few years, the Indian education system has undergone a handful of changes. While the educational scenarios in India are rapidly evolving, the ‘one curriculum for all’ remains the same. Parents are now opting for homeschooling instead of regular and rigid classroom regimes to combat this issue. While homeschooling has its cons, it mostly caters to an individual child's needs and helps him develop his interests at a very young age. This system has been prevalent in Western countries for a long time; however, it is relatively new in India. Homeschooling can be fun and interesting for the child, but after completing a certain age, it is important to appear for an international or national-level examination to get a certificate for college admissions.

There are only a few boards in India that provide a platform for homeschooled students to take a national-level exam. Parents must also know the legality of homeschooling along with the options available for their child after completing the senior secondary or secondary curriculum. While homeschooling can be beneficial for the child, the options for their recognition are limited as of now. Check out more information about the schools that homeschooled students can tie up with for board exams to get a government-recognized certificate for college admissions:

What is Homeschooling?

When a parent or a guardian decides to educate their child at home instead of in a classroom, it is called homeschooling. Homeschooling is more inclined towards focusing on the needs and wants of a child according to his or her personality and area of interest. The setting in homeschooling is more fun and less rigid than a classroom where one curriculum is provided for different students with different personalities. It also provides the flexibility of learning from anywhere and anytime; however, it does require one-on-one attention. It is more suitable for a child whose one parent is dedicated to only educating him since it does require a schedule to be followed for effective learning. Homeschooling is legal in India according to the RTE Act.

List of Schools to tie up with for Board Exams for Homeschoolers

After learning about every basic thing taught in school at home, these students need to take a national or international level exam to get an eligibility certificate for higher education. Almost every college in India needs an eligibility certificate stating that the students have completed the senior secondary curriculum successfully. Not a lot of schools or boards in India provide the option for homeschoolers to take the board exams. While traditional schools are still working on their options for homeschoolers, there are some online schools available for the students that help them to appear for board exams. The schools mentioned below will provide recognition and accreditation to homeschoolers through their platforms:

  • 21k School
  • K8 school
  • Wolsey Hall Oxford
  • Cyboard online school
  • Bridgeway Academy
  • Griha Shiksha
  • GoSchool
  • The Real School

List of Boards Providing Exams For Homeschoolers

There are currently two different boards in India providing options for homeschoolers to directly enroll for senior and senior secondary board exams to get an eligibility certificate.

  • Once the students have successfully turned the age of 14 years and have completed the basic senior secondary curriculum, they can appear for the board exams conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
  • Another option available for the student is the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exam. IGCSE is an internationally recognized qualification exam for secondary students that gives out a certificate eligible in colleges in India.

While homeschooling is widely spread across Western countries, it is still in the developing stages in India. You may find a lot of children pursuing homeschooling in metropolises, while the concept is almost invisible in small towns. However, with more and more educated parents and the rapidly changing educational regimes, it is predicted to be seen more and more in the next few years. Having said so, the number of schools providing board exams or other eligibility certificates for homeschoolers will also see rapid growth. Right now, some online schools help students get recognition after completing their senior secondary curriculum. Lastly, it's the decision of the parents after weighing their options to either choose a traditional school or stick with a different route: homeschooling.
