Ishu Patel

The first name that comes up is Ishu Patel who is an Indian-Canadian who is currently working as an animation film director, educator as well as a producer. Ishu was born in Gujarat, India on April 20, 1942, and later moved to Canada to pursue his dreams. He graduated from NID Ahmedabad and was awarded the Award of Excellence in Animation in the year 2009. Ishu Patel spent 25 years of his life in Canada working on the development of different animation techniques and giving a new touch to his themes and thoughts.

Dayanita Singh

Dayanita Singh was born on March 18, 1961, in New Delhi, India. Dayanita is one of the other notable NID Alumni who have made full use of their potential and knowledge acquired from the National Institute of Design. She is one of the most well-known photographers across the globe. Having published more than 14 books, she completed her Bachelor’s in Visual Communication from NID. Later on, she went on to study Documentary Photography at the International Center of Photography, New York. The NID Alumni Dayanita Singh’s portfolio is filled with photographs of Zakir Hussain, Blue Book, Privacy, Dream Villa, Chairs, Go Away Closer, and much more.

M.P. Ranjan

M.P. Ranjan, also known as Mundon Pandon Ranjan, was born in Madras, Tamil Nadu in 1950. Ranjan was an Indian educator and designer. Renowned for his famous book, Handmade in India: A Geographic Encyclopedia of Indian Handicrafts, the book revolves around themes of Indian Arts and Crafts. A fellow design pedagogue, Aditi Ranjan helped him to edit this book and got it published. M.P. Ranjan died at the age of 65 on August 9, 2015.

Harun Robert

Harun Robert was born on December 28, 1978, in New Delhi and he completed his graduation from NID Ahmedabad in the field of Animation Design. Robert later on took admission into the College of Art, New Delhi as well. He is quite active on social media and runs a channel called “Artguyrob” along with “Mad Stuff with Rob”. Robert used to be quite famous as the host and creative director of the show, “Do It Yourself (DIY) M.A.D.” He currently appears in the show “Imagine That” on Disney.

Lekha Washington

Another great alumni of NID is Lekha Washington who was born on April 30, 1984. Washington is an actress, artist and product designer. Earlier, she got herself enrolled into the Lifestyle Product Design course at the National Institute of Design, but she changed her mind soon thereafter and switched to the Film and Video Communication course. Lekha owns a product design company which is based in Mumbai called “Ajji”. The portfolio of this famous NID alumni showcases how she has worked in films like Kamina (2013), Dhinam (1999) etc.

Rahul Mishra

Rahul Mishra was born in New Delhi, India on November 7, 1979. He completed his MDes programme in Apparel Design from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Luckily, Mishra got an opportunity to present his works at the Haute Couture Week, Paris. Mishra became the first Indian designer to grab hold of such a prestigious opportunity. Rahul Mishra has been awarded with the International Woolmark Prize in 2014, the Best Womenswear Designer in 2012, and the MTV Youth Icon of the Year in 2008 etc.

Aditya Vikram Sengupta

Aditya Vikram Sengupta is another NID alumni who made it big in the fashion industry. He was born on September 6, 1983 in Kolkata, West Bengal. Sengupta is a renowned Indian Film Director, Graphic Designer and Cinematographer. He completed his graduation from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad and released his first film ever in 2014, Asha Jaoar Majhe which was showcased at the Venice International Film Festival. He was rewarded with the National Award for Best Debut.

Sujata Keshavan

Sujata Keshavnan was born in 1961 and is known for being an impeccable graphic designer. She graduated from NID Ahmedabad and went on to become the founder of Ray and Keshavnan, an Indian design firm. Sujata completed her Master’s in Graphic Design from Yale University, USA. Talking about the Annual Advertising and Marketing Awards, Keshavnan is the only Graphic Designer who has been rewarded with the Graphic Designer of the Year award twice in a row.

Orjit Sen

Orjit Sen completed his graduation from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad and went on to produce his graphic novel, River of Stories which was published in the year 1994 by Kalpavriksh. This novel is considered the first graphic novel to be published by an Indian designer and is thus considered a major landmark in the history of design. Sen did not stop at just that, he co-founded a studio for designers, artists and craftspeople in the year 1990 which came to be known as “People Tree.” He is also known for being the co-founder of The Pao Collective.

Aditya Pande

Aditya Pande was born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh in 1976. He completed his bachelor’s from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad in 2001 and is famous for his contemporary art presently. Pande conducted his first solo show at Chatterjee and Lal, Mumbai in the year 2008 which was called “A to Zoo”.
