The OCI MBBS admission in India varies for different states due to the varying state laws. NRI (Non-Resident Indian) students can avail 15% quota, but not all of these seats can be availed by the students belonging to OCI category. In fact, out of the 15% NRI Reservation Quota, only OCI students are entitled to only 1% of it.

Then again, the rules and regulations in different states vary. Due to the lack of standardisation and uniformity in India, the topic may become confusing to you. So, if you are interested in getting MBBS admissions under OCI category then this article is for you. Here, we will be discussing the eligibility requirements, MBBS admission process, state-wise rules and regulations and all the necessary information about OCI MBBS admissions 2021.

Latest Updates

13th July 2021: As per the newly released dates, NEET 2021 will be taking place on 12th Sept. Applications for the same has commenced on 13th July 2021.

What is OCI Quota and Who Comes Under it?

OCI stands for Overseas Citizen of India. Basically, students who are the citizen of some other country but are of Indian origin or belonged to a territory which became a part of India after its independence on 15th Aug 1947.

These are the candidates who are eligible to apply for MBBS admissions in India under the OCI category. In fact, states like Karnataka has asked to treat students holding OCI cards as Indian citizens for admissions to the professional courses. These candidates are even entitled to admission under the State Quota.

State-wise Rules and Policies for OCI Admission 2021

As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, different Indian states have different rules regarding the MBBS admission for OCI students. Here are some of the examples:

Karnataka and Gujarat: Both states consider OCI category students as NRI. According to the Karnataka High Court, candidates with OCI cards are to be treated as Indian citizens for admission to the professional courses.

Maharashtra: The Government of Maharashtra required an OCI candidate to hold at least 10 years of domicile with Class 11 and 12 mark sheets to take admission in professional courses through the OCI Quota.

Uttar Pradesh: The Government of Uttar Pradesh also treats the OCI category students as NRIs, provided that they are holding an OCI card issued by the embassy.

Tamil Nadu: Some states consider OCI candidates equal to NRI students, whereas Tamil Nadu treats OCI candidates the same as Indian citizens.

Other States: The remaining states required different documents to confirm a candidate’s eligibility with the respective state medical councils.

OCI Admissions Guidelines 2021

Apart from the above-mentioned information, there are a few other things that you need to keep in mind.

  • Be it an overseas student or a domestic one, qualifying NEET is compulsory. Things may have been different before 2016, but with the interception of the Supreme Court, this national-level entrance examination has become mandatory.

  • You are required to hold a valid Adhaar Card as ID proof. This is mandatory for all but candidates native to Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, and Meghalaya.

  • If you do not possess an Adhaar Card, your valid passport would be used as authentic ID proof. For this, you must mention your passport number on the application form.

  • It is important for you to choose the city for the exam wisely. Choosing a state with the maximum number of seats offered can be proved beneficial for you. There are 80 cities around the country that conduct the examination. At the time of application, a foreign student such as yourself can mark three different centres in a city for participating.

  • Although NRI (in some cases, OCI as well) students are entitled to 15% management or institutional quota in private colleges, for the state reservation quota, that state is the sole authority for providing quota or not. For instance, the Govt. of Kashmir rejects entertaining a request for such quota. Maharashtra Government, on the other hand, has nodded to provide candidates with quota seats for the admissions.

Hope you found this article informative. We would also advise you to validate the facts and regulations mentioned here with the concerned official authorities. To know more about MBBS admissions in India, stay tuned with CollegeDekho.
