Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune is a private university, promoted by Tolani Education Foundation and was established in the year 1998. TMI is spread across 100 acres of land offering Marine Engineering and Nautical Science programmes. The institute is affiliated with Indian Maritime University, Chennai. It is one of the largest maritime education institutions approved by DG Shipping (Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India). TMI Pune is a co-ed college and admission to different degree programmes is based on TMISAT or IMUCET entrance examinations. The institute offers good placement opportunities with decent packages. Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune is a private institute where students are offered undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. • Vasant J. Sheth Memorial Foundation Need cum Merit-based Scholarship: The Foundation has instituted three merit-cum-need based scholarships of INR 30,000 per semester over the full four-year Marine Engineering programme to the students selected from the batch of new entrants.

• Industry Sponsored Scholarships: The scholarship is given to meritorious students by leading shipping companies like NYK, K-Line, Dockendale etc. 

• Menghraj Karna Need-cum-Merit based Scholarship for Girls: This scholarship provides financial support to the selected female students of UG programmes. 

Our Take:

Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune is a popular institution and the number of students taking admission to the college is also huge. However, students have complained that the course fee is quite high. According to the alumni, the course fee gets increased by 10% every year and quality of life is tough. Multiple rules and restrictions have left very little freedom around the college. Life on campus is a lot less enjoyable than it was before and it is reducing further by the day.

TMI Pune Infrastructure

The TMI Pune college campus is built in a rural area so that students are not restricted in a cityscape. Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune has hostel accommodation for students and an executive residence for those enrolled in advanced courses. Students reside in three hostels where hostels 2 and 3 overlook a 200-metre synthetic athletics track. There are separate hostels for male and female students. Each hostel room can accommodate 2 students and each student has a bed, study table, light, fan, and LAN port. Extensive sports facilities have been provided to promote a healthy active lifestyle. Students can access the Wi-Fi in their hostel rooms. A separate building is there inside the campus overlooking the lake housing well-furnished single/ double rooms suitable for short-term visitors. Hostel

There are three hostels each having more than 250 rooms, modern kitchens, and separate 250-seat dining halls. A reading room, a television room with a large screen projection television, and activity areas are located in the buildings. An internal quadrangle provides a large open space suitable for recreational or leisure activities. A majority of hostel rooms also have Wi-Fi access to the campus data network. 

WiFi

TMI, Pune has a fully switched network plus WiFi capability in the residential hostels providing residents with 24x7 internet access from almost anywhere on campus.

Library

The 7,000 sq ft library offers a broad range of books relevant to maritime disciplines, mechanical engineering, computers and the basic sciences to the students and faculty of TMI. Students can also find a large number of popular magazines and current maritime journals inside the library. Multi-media resources can also be accessed and are expected to increase in number. Tolani Maritime Institute’s library remains open for extended hours for the use of all residents and is used extensively for research associated with project assignments.

Auditorium

The auditorium is fully air-conditioned with a seating capacity of 280 pupils and is well-equipped with modern projection facilities. It is designed in a way that provides a venue for seminars, large group presentations and special events including extra-curricular activities for the students.

Classrooms

The institution has 35 comfortable classrooms with larger AV rooms and drawing halls distributed between three buildings. The classrooms have modern audio-visual teaching aids, furniture, equipment and subject-specific demonstration facilities. Each classroom can accommodate 40 students. 

Laboratories

The laboratories are set up so that the teachers can demonstrate and teach the principles of material testing, mechanics, hydraulics, electric control systems, electronic equipment, and electric machinery. 

Medical Centre

The college campus has a modern and well-equipped Primary Health Care Centre. The centre has three beds, an operating theatre for minor surgical procedures, a pathological laboratory, a pharmacy for common generic formulations and an ambulance. A resident doctor and medical team provide round-the-clock medical attention to all the residents. The Talegaon Medical College and Lokmanya Hospital, Nigdi and Aditya Birla Hospital, Chinchwad provide opinions of senior specialists to deliver a high level of medical care. TMI has facilitated an insurance policy with Future Generali at a one-time cost of INR 6,000 per student for all years of study on campus. This policy covers the following:

1. Accidental death of a student - INR 5,00,000

2. Hospitalisation expenses for students - INR 1,00,000 per year

3. The accidental death of the bread-winning parent to cover the fees of the student for the remaining period of the course.

Sports Complex

There is a sports complex inside the institute which can be used by the students. Four compact catamaran sailboats, rowing and a lifeboat on the lake provide the opportunity for students to sail and learn boat work and life-saving. The complex includes four glass back squash courts, three indoor wooden floor badminton courts, three well-equipped gymnasiums and several indoor games. Shopping Complex

The TMI, Pune campus has a shopping complex where the daily basic needs of all residents can be met. Vendors include a provisions store, a hairdresser, a tailor, a fast food outlet, and a fax/ stationery outlet. The shopkeepers are carefully monitored for the quality of their products and services as well as the reasonability of prices.

Transport

There is a regularly scheduled bus service between the campus and Talegaon. On weekends, a more intensive schedule is provided to serve both staff as well as students. Talegaon is very well connected to Pune and Lonavala by local trains, and the latter is a major transit stop for trains and buses to Mumbai.

Laundry

A modern laundry capable of handling the entire load generated by campus residents is located on-site. The laundry equipment ensures that all campus residents are assured of high-quality cleaning in completely hygienic surroundings.

Banks

The institute has access to Axis Bank's Pimpri-Chinchwad branch which provides all essential banking facilities on campus. The nearest ATM is HDFC Bank.

Other facilities provided by the college to the students are the campus engineering system, power plant, vapour observation chiller, water treatment plant and effluent treatment plant. 

Our Take:

According to some students, Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune has good hostels with comfortable rooms, wifi and a great library. Students have to register for the hostel facility when taking admission. However, the hostel fee is around INR 52,000 to 60,000 per semester including food which is quite expensive. After one year of studying, students have to pay around INR 1.2 lakhs for hostel facilities. Students have often complained about the same food being repeated every week.

The training and placement cell of Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune assists students in getting internships and jobs. The institute has a good placement record, where 100% of eligible candidates of B.Tech Marine Engineering, B.Sc Nautical Science and Electro Technical officer’s course are placed who graduated in 2022. The placement record at Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune is quite good. Students get internship opportunities and good placements in renowned shipping companies. The institute's placement cell is engaged and diligent in its efforts to place graduates. If students bag international jobs, their packages are even higher. Students who excel academically are at an advantage and get higher salaries as compared to the others.

TMI, Pune Diversity & Representation

The number of female students in marine courses is in general quite low as compared to male candidates. The cohort of TMI Pune is no exception with around 10 female students in a batch of 1200. Some batches of ME and NS had just 2-3 females. TMI Pune has made some efforts to encourage girl students to apply for marine courses which includes 50% fee waiver and several scholarship schemes.

While students from other states get admitted to TMI Pune, the gender diversity of the college is in a sorry state right now. Despite marine engineering being a primarily male-dominated field, TMI's steps to attract female applicants are commendable.

The faculty of TMI, Pune comprises experienced teachers specialised in fields such as marine engineering, nautical sciences, naval architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, applied sciences and information technology. The maritime faculty also has substantial shipboard experience as senior officers. The faculty of Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune are highly skilled in practical training and laboratory instruction by technically qualified and experienced instructors and other technical staff that operate and maintain the campus engineering systems. Talegaon is very well connected to Pune and Lonavala by local trains, and the latter is a major transit stop for trains and buses to Mumbai. The local train will take about 50 minutes from Pune Junction to Talegaon. Students who are not comfortable travelling by local trains can opt for bus services that are easily available. Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune is basically located in a village and the daily commute can get a little time-taking.

Being a top marine college in India, Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune is a good institute as it offers great facilities and quality education. The institute also has a good track record of internships and placements. The faculty and placement cell of TMI, Pune are highly skilled and provide proper assistance to the students. The placement cell makes sure that all the students are placed after their graduation. Big shipping companies hire candidates of TMI if they have good academic records and offer satisfactory salary packages. 

On the downside, students have often complained that the institute is very strict, sometimes seeming like a school. The courses at TMI, Pune are very expensive as students have to pay 18 to 20 lakhs for 3 to 4-year courses. The hostel facilities are good, however, they are nothing extraordinary, but students have to pay INR 50,000 to 62,000 per semester to access the hostel.
