1,000 IIT Students to Get Prime Minister’s Fellowship from Next Year
The scheme will come into effect from the next academic session.
The government of India is planning to implement Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship scheme for IIT students. The intention is to encourage the talented students to take up research. Under this scheme, 1,000 students will get a fellowship for research. The scheme will come into effect from the next academic session.

The IIT Council will gather for a meeting on August 23, 2016, to discuss the fellowship scheme and ways to implement it from the next academic year. The inspiration behind this scheme is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Imprint India’ which was launched in November 2015 to provide a platform for scientific research in the country.

Mr. Anil Kakodar, an eminent scientist and a member of government panel said that the third year students of IITs and NITs should be initiated into PhD programmes. For this purpose, there is a need to identify the young talents among IITs for quality research. The students have to enrol in PhD programmes in the final year to receive the fellowship. The students will be required to submit a proposal regarding the research project.
