136 Fake Degree Cases Reported to Mumbai University
Mumbai University has received 136 fake degree cases both at graduation and post-graduation level in just four months of the academic year 2015-16.

In a reply to an RTI filed by an activist revealed that the number of cases of the fake degree has detected per month has gone up to 34 as against 21 in 2012-13.
In reply to the RTI, the officials of the Marks and Certificates Unit of Examination section of MU also revealed that the number of such cases jumped to 136 in the first four months of the academic year 2015-2016 as compared to 252 cases in 2012-13, 242 cases in 2013-14 and 274 cases detected in 2014-15.
These cases of fake degree certificates were reported to MU through police complaints, verification request by companies, by the police department and other universities between the academic year 2012 and 2015.
The activist also complain that despite the rising number of fake degrees detected and knowing the pattern of such incidents, neither education ministers of the state nor education officials have taken any corrective steps to stop the malpractice.
In 2010, following a directive from the then education minister, MU had filed FIRs against 627 people for submitting and procuring fake degree certificates.
These cases were detected during verification carried out between the academic year 2006 and 2009.According to an official from MU’s Marks and Certificates Unit of Examination section maximum number of cases can be found in Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), the other disciplines include Bachelor of Arts (BA), engineering, Bachelor of Science (BSc) and also Masters of Management Studies (MMS).
