1st Woman Principal Appointed at Meerut College in 124 Years
Dr. B Kumar (Mittal) has been appointed as the principal of Meerut College and is the first woman principal in 124 years of the establishment of the college.
Dr. B Kumar (Mittal) initially joined Meerut College in 1971 and was the first girl student of B.Com course offered by the college. In recent events, she has created history again. She has been appointed as the principal of Meerut College becoming the first woman principal in 124 years of the establishment of the college.
Meerut College was established in 1892 and has ever since been one of the most reputed colleges of Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU). There has not been any woman principal in the history of the institute before Dr. B Kumar. The news came as a surprise to Kumar, who has been receiving warm congratulatory messages ever since she got appointed.
She has been a part of Meerut college faculty since 1975 when she started working as a commerce lecturer.
The principal recalled her days when she studied in the college and said that B.Com was not a course that attracted many girls in those days. She also said that there was just one more girl student by the time she started pursuing M.Com.
She was the topper of her M.Com batch where she was the only girl student in the batch full of boys. Then she later received a letter of joining at Meerut College. She flourished in a time when pursuing Ph.D. was only possible if after one has completed 13 years of service as a lecturer.
Kumar has two daughters, both of them settled in the USA and her husband is a doctor at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). She is enthusiastic to take up her new role and lead the institution to greater heights.
She added that it is her wish to prove that women are very proficient in handling responsibilities.
She also informed that she plans to take initiatives to include girl students in the proctor board that has always been populated with boys.
