A 22-year-old law student at Amity Law School in Noida, Rudrali Patil was left nervous as well as excited at the same time when she received a call from the British High Commission asking her to serve as its commissioner to India for a day. Rudrali was surprised and amazed at being selected to be appointed for the top post. She was chosen for this unique opportunity after she emerged victorious in a video making competition that was themed around ‘girls’ rights’ conducted by the British High Commission.

The law student assumed charge as British High Commissioner to India on October 9, 2017. She dressed in a black suit and donned the diplomat cap effortlessly. As a high commissioner, she chaired a meeting with the directors of departments in the High Commission to become acquainted with its operations. Dominic Asquith (High Commissioner) mentored Rudrali Patil during her stint there.

Rudrali Patil pointed that the High Commissioner had been like a parental figure to her. Working with him for a day was an amazing and fruitful experience, she added. She further elaborated that it is a very difficult task to follow up with the given instructions while at work. She continued to praise the High Commissioner for being supremely perfect in not only completing the assigned tasks but to also evaluate and seek an update on them from time to time.

Sharing her experience, Rudrali Patil mentioned that she was extremely stressed a day before assuming charge. She had worked the whole night to prepare for the opening speech at the British High Commission. She also worked on her facial expressions and body language. Rudrali believes that the post of British High Commissioner is a ‘stressful job’, but nonetheless, she cherished every moment she spent there.

Adding on, Rudrali said that the deputy commissioner had explained the procedure to take short notes before delivering a speech. Along with him, Rudrali participated in a programme ‘chat with diplomat’ organised by the Indraprastha College.

Rudrali has been relentlessly working with a group of volunteers to educate women and girls about their property and legal rights. Even while addressing the media, she spoke extensively about the empowerment of girl children in rural India.
