UGC and AICTE have announced that 23 Universities and 279 technical institutions in India are fake. The report also suggests that Delhi tops the charts with a total of 66 fake colleges and 7 fake univesities. All these institutes are functioning without the regulator’s permission.
Other states with majority of fake institutions are Telangana, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
All these institutes have not been authorized to grant degrees. Any certificate issued by any of these institutes will merely be a piece of paper with no merit.

UGC and AICTE have listed the names of all the fake universities and institutes for the convenience of students. All candidates applying for the new academic session must ensure that the institutes they are considering are approved by either of the regulators.
The list has also been forwarded to the concerned state authorities so that necessary action can be taken against such illegal institutions. In order to make sure that students don’t apply to such institutes, AICTE has also published public notices in newspapers.
Police complaints will also be registered against fake universities to investigate the matter carefully, informed Mahendra Nath Pandey, Minister of state for HRD. The states have also been asked to start proceedings against individuals involved in deceiving students.

Fake universities and institutions have been cheating students by claiming to provide authorized certificates that can improve job prospects of the students. The HRD ministry, UGC and AICTE are taking all necessary steps to stop such institutes from attracting students and investigate the matter.
