The Government of India has de-affiliated over 400 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) after the quality inspections carried out by it found these institutes to be lacking the required trainers and infrastructure for imparting vocational training to students.

Mr. Rajesh Agarwal - Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship confirmed that 400 out of 13,000 ITIs across the country are being de-affiliated. He further indicated that the ITIs must maintain quality trainers and infrastructure as per the guidelines prescribed the ministry to enjoy benefits of affiliation. These institutes must at least meet the minimum standards and conditions to evade de-affiliation.

Mr. Agarwal has further indicated that the Ministry of Skill Development has initiated the process of monitoring the ITIs with a motive to maintaining the quality standards and introduced independent and voluntary self-grading by the institutes. ITIs, which do not meet the minimum requirements will be chucked out of the system, he added.

The vocational training programmes of Government of India are administered by the ITIs that caters to over 36% of the seven million people enrolled in different training programmes across the country.
