42% of DU Colleges Functioning without Principals

A total number of 28 colleges of Delhi University out of 66 are functioning without principals. This tendency has been observed in the past few years, and the administration of Delhi University has failed to appoint permanent principals. Shortage of faculty is also one among the issues that are being neglected by the administration. The premier university has failed to appoint around 4,500 teachers in the past five years.

On the other hand, most of the teachers claim that the biggest reason behind it is the decision-making and governance at the colleges. Teachers indicated it as hard to run the colleges on their whims and fancies. All these 28 colleges have been functioning with officiating principal for the past five years.

Surprisingly, top colleges of DU like Kirori Mal College, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Hindu College and Hans Raj College also do not have permanent principals.

P.C Jain, the permanent principal of Shri Ram College of Commerce, superannuated in October 2014. On the other hand, the post of principal in Hans Raj College fell vacant in 2009. Similarly, Hindu College has been facing the same issue since 2008. However, the governing bodies of Hindu College and Shri Ram College of Commerce sent in names for the appointment of new principals in December 2016. However, the administration of Delhi University is yet to approve it.

P.C. Jain pointed that vested interests have been the reason for the non-appointment of principals. DU has not taken any step regarding the appointment of teachers. On the other hand, the government is emphasizing on creating Centres of Excellence. But the question is that how can they become such centres without permanent principals and teachers.
