Due to the flexible norms of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), hundreds of new engineering colleges have come up in recent years, which is leading to the deteriorating quality of education in India. Most of the engineering colleges do not have proper faculty and functioning with sans faculty. These colleges do not have required students’ strength either.

So, AICTE has come up with an initiative to close down all engineering colleges which do not have proper strength and faculty. AICTE did not mention the names of the colleges which are on the verge of closure, but as far as Maharashtra is concerned, a total number of 50 colleges are under the scan of AICTE.

The problem with these institutions is vacant seats. Every year, at least 40% out of total engineering seats are remaining vacant in the state. Earlier, a committee was constituted under the chairmanship of Dr. Yadav to submit the report on various reasons for engineering seats lying vacant. The committee submitted the report and did not bring any change in the system. As a result of which, around 65,000 engineering seats are vacant in the state in 2016.

Dr. Anil Sahastrabudhe, Chairman of AICTE, revealed that a total number of 50 colleges in Maharashtra do not have proper infrastructure, faculty and students. AICTE might conduct surprise inspections in these colleges, and after the inspections, a notice will be issued to all these colleges. If these colleges develop infrastructure and faculty after issuing a notice, they will be given relief and non-performers will have no other option except to shut down.
