On 20th June, the Karnataka State’s Legislative Assembly passed an amendment where it has decided to reserve 50 percent seats for the domicile quota students at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore. The legislative council still needs to pass the bill.

The amendment to the NLSIU Act, 1986 was managed by Basavaraj Rayareddy, Higher Education Minister on the behalf of Law Minister T.B. Jayachandra. As per sources, earlier the Bill proposed to reserve 30 percent seats for local students of Karnataka. Also, it allowed students to apply for domicile reservation if either of their parents has resided in Karnataka for at least ten years before they have qualified the entrance examination along with the condition that the students must have studied in a recognised educational institute in the state for at least five years.

However, BJP members urged to increase the seats for the resident student from 30 percent to 50 percent and to bring down the domicile requirement from 10 years to 7 years. Thus, the bill was passed in the legislative assembly approving both these demands.

At present, NLSIU Bangalore is giving admission on the basis of student's performance in Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Currently, NLSIU offers 80 seats for the undergraduate programme i.e BA.LL.B (Hons.) and has 50 seats each in postgraduate law programme as well as in masters course degree in Public Policy.

According to the sources, the Indian government is working for IIT Dhanbad on a similar reservation policy to reserve 25 percent of all seats for local students.

The government came to this decision since last year resident students were not able to get admission in these colleges. As per the data, only six students got admission in IIT Dharwad whereas NLSIU Bangalore admitted only eight local students.
