For all Maharashtra state medical or dental colleges, a candidate is required to sore 50% in the HSC exams and must appear for the MHT-CET to qualify the eligibility criteria. The first merit list will be declared within 10 days.
There have been controversies regarding the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) ever since the SC made it mandatory for all students to take NEET for admissions in medical colleges. On the protests from parents and state education ministers, an ordinance was passed by the President that overturned the Supreme Court verdict partially.
For 2016, admissions to government medical and dental colleges of Maharashtra will be done through the MHT-CET scores. Private colleges will refer to NEET scores for allotting seats to students. From 2017 onwards, NEET scores will be necessary for admissions to all medical colleges in Maharashtra.
Eligibility criteria for admissions to engineering colleges in the state is a minimum of 50 per cent in the HSC exam. Apart from this all students applying for engineering courses should have had Mathematics as a compulsory subject.
Students who had both Biology and Mathematics as compulsory subjects are eligible for both engineering and pharmacy colleges. Dayanand Meshram, Joint Director, Directorate of Technical Education said that students who have secured more than 100 marks in MHT-CET are eligible for admission to medical college as well. He also mentioned that there will be more transparency in the admission process for engineering colleges from this year. Registration for engineering admissions will start from 2nd June.
Quota and NRI quota students seeking admission are required to appear for the Common Admission Process (CAP), as per the new regulations. Aspirants have to rank their colleges in order of preference before the first round of counseling.
“They can mark their choices from one to 300, one being the highest. For the next two rounds of counseling, they cannot change their preference,” added Meshram.
Reporting for admission will be done at the Admission Reporting Centre (ARC) instead of the college. Student will have to pay an admission fee of Rs. 5,000 to the ARC. Once the admission is confirmed the fee will be transferred to the college.
The number of seats for Pharmacy in Maharashtra has been increased from 10,770 to 11,212 for the academic year of 2016, while engineering seats in Maharashtra have been reduced to 1,38,741 from 1,53,867 as compared to 2015.
