Only 42% of engineering students across the country were successful in getting jobs in campus placements for the academic session 2017-18. Compared to the previous five years, the number of engineering students securing jobs in campus placements has increased in 2017-18, which can be attributed to more hiring by companies coupled with the closure of many higher educational institutes in the country.

AICTE official data clearly indicates that 58% of students failed to secure jobs in the campus placements. Even though 42% employment percentage for engineering graduates is higher than 2016-17, 58% of unemployment is a major concern and alarming too. However, the 2017-18 academic session witnessed an increase in the number of companies that recruited students. Many companies have also increased their job offers so that more students were able to secure jobs in the campus placements.

The closure of some of the engineering colleges and minimising the enrolment partially were some of the reasons for the decline in the employment percentage among engineering graduates in 2017-18. Compared to 2014-15, the number of engineering institutes under the ambit of AICTE has declined from 3,400 to 3,225 in 2017-18.

Due to the poor employment rate over the years, various states have urged AICET not to grant approval for new technical institutes.

As per AICTE data, more than 3.8 lakh students who completed the third year of engineering course secured summer internships. In terms of internships, the number is impressive, and AICTE is expecting a significant surge in the number of internships.
