Union Minister of State for Family and Health Welfare, Mr. Ashwini Kumar Choubey informed Rajya Sabha that the government added over 5,000 PG (Post Graduate) medical seats this year in various medical colleges across the country. Similarly, 13,004 MBBS seats have been added in the past three years in 479 medical colleges across the country. The government is taking steps to increase the number of doctors in India to maintain a balanced doctor-population ratio, he highlighted.

Informing further, Mr. Ashwini Kumar explained that the government had permitted a one-time increase in the number of PG medical seats only after the revision of teacher-student ratio. The government intended to increase the availability of specialist doctors and faculty in the country. Therefore, an approval was given to add 5,800 PG medical seats, he mentioned.

These medical colleges will be established in underdeveloped areas of the country, clarified by the Union Minister.

The Union Minister gave details about other centrally sponsored schemes through which PG and UG seats in existing government medical colleges would be increased. The government has rationalised the MSRs (Minimum Standard Requirements) for medical colleges such as staff, infrastructure, bend strength and land for setting up new colleges, added that minister.
