Six engineering colleges in Nagpur university are closing down due to lack of admissions and the high cost of maintenance of infrastructure. Engineering seats vacancies in maharashtra touching new high every year, with lots of engineering colleges remain vacant after all CAP rounds.
According to data from the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), only 1.07 lakh students have applied for the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) to around 1.56 lakh engineering degree seats in colleges across Maharashtra in 2015.
Of the 1,07,147 applications received by DTE in 2015, 76,758 applicants were male and 30,389 were girls.
DTE officials said that the number of applications for engineering seats has been declining over the last few years and is likely to go below 1 lakh. Last year, around 1.06 lakh students had applied for engineering admissions.
According to Joint Director of Technical Education(DTE) Mr. Gulab Thakre, the 6 engineering colleges in Nagpur that are shutting down include:
- Bhausaheb Mulik College of Engineering, Nagpur
- Central India Institute of Engg & Technology, Nagpur
- Om College of Engineering, Nagpur
- VM Institute of Engineering & Technology, Nagpur
- Acharya Vinobha Bhave Institute of Technology, Nagpur
- Agnihotri Group of Institutions in Wardha, Nagpur
Many colleges have already applied for closing branches like Computer and IT and refused to participate in Central admission process(CAP)
Due to lack of proper teaching staff, poor infrastructure and placement after completion of engineering degree, many students are taking admissions to career options like Biotechnology and Pharmacy.
