6 Students of IIT-B Opt for Deferral Placement Programme to Start their Own Venture

The placement season is all set to begin at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay on December 1, 2016. Almost all the students are busy in preparing for the campus placements. However, six students of IIT-B are not participating in the current placement session. Bikram Kumar Sinha is one among them who has been granted two years to work on his startup. If the startups or ventures of these six students fail to procure the desired result, they will take part in the placement season of 2018-19 batch.

Deferral Placement Programme (DPP) of IIT-B grants offers to the students who are interested in starting their ventures or work in the social sector instead of attending campus placements. The institute started this initiative in the year 2012. This year, a total number of six students have been given a chance to try their luck in making their startups or ventures successful. If the students fail to succeed, they can come back to campus placements after two years.

Bikram Kumar Sinha explained that they were planning to set up an e-commerce platform where the customers can buy plants online. Most of his classmates have opted to take part in campus placements. However, he thought differently and chose to start a venture.

He further added that he has been working on his project named Plantley for the past seven months. Currently, he is trying to find investors for the project to make it self-sustained. His primary idea was to contribute 1.5 percent of profits to Green India Project.

Bikram Kumar is the only student from Metallurgical Engineering department. The other team members include four students from Aerospace Engineering (B.Tech) and a Computer Science (M.Tech) student.
