On Friday, the Academic Council of FTII will be discussing the new fee proposal with the Film Division in Mumbai. According to sources, it has been found that the administration of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) has decided to increase fee for various courses offered to students at the institute. According to the new fee proposal there will be a hike in the existing fee by 33 per cent to 600 per cent.

In case the new fee proposal is approved, the students will have to pay Rs. 6.82 lakh for a two-year Diploma in Acting which will make the course the most expensive one among others. Also, this amount is only the tuition fee and is exclusive of the accommodation and other fees, which has been revised to 92,565 per annum.

Apart from the fee hike, another matter to be discussed in the meeting is to put an age limit for students applying for admission at the institute. According to the new proposal, the maximum age limit will be fixed at 25 years (30 for SC/ST and 28 for OBC).

Earlier, the institute did not have any age restrictions for its aspirants.

Also, for fee hike, the Principal Director of Audit (Central) has been asked to submit a draft report after inspecting the FTII.

In its defense FTII has mentioned the increase in the cost of higher and specialised education, cost of equipment, maintenance of the equipment, payment of remuneration to guest faculties etc. as the reasons for the need to increase the current existing tuition fee.

Some of the changes proposed according to the new fee structure are as follows:

  • Increase in the per annum fee of Film Direction, Film Cinematography and Film Editing and Sound Recording and Sound Design (SRSD)from Rs 48,315 per annum to Rs 64,308.
  • Increase in per annum two-year Diploma in Acting course has been revised from Rs 48,315 to Rs 3,41,025.
  • Increase from Rs 48,315 to Rs 1,94,872 per annum for Diploma in Art Direction and Production Design Course.
  • Increase from Rs 48,315 to Rs 1.65 lakh for one-year television courses (four specialisations) and one-year screenplay writing courses.

Apart from the tuition fees, the amount paid by the students as hostel rent, deposits and other charges too are proposed to be almost doubled from Rs 47,500 (of which Rs 17,000 refundable) to Rs 92,565 (refundable Rs 33,128).

Also, the proposal to fix a maximum age limit for admission is also new as there was not any age limit set by the institute for its aspirants previously. Earlier, the aspirants coming for admission were found to be in between 21 years to 35 years. Because of the age gap, students found hard for themselves to adjust in the heterogeneous group. While the senior teammates were found to be having more experience and maturity than the junior ones, the junior teammates were more tech savvy than the senior ones.
