West Bengal: 6000 ITI Graduates To be Enrolled In Government Internships
The government of West Bengal has introduced government interships of Rs.5000 per month for 6000 Bengal graduates on Monday.
The chief minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee publicized the West Bengal students’ internship scheme on January 31 that passed out technical students from ITIs and Polytechnics to get an internship amounting to Rs. 5000 per month every year in the government offices of West Bengal. After introducing Students' credit cards a few days back, the Government of West Bengal has now come up with new initiatives like government internships for the welfare of the Bengal students.
Eligibility Criteria for Internship
The eligibility for this internship is -
- Minimum marks acquired by the students have to be at least 60% marks and should be aged below 40 years and have done their graduation from the technical fields such as ITIs, Polytechnic & equivalent institutions.
- Every year 6,000 interns will be taken from the technical fields offering them a remuneration of Rs. 5000 per month.
CM of West Bengal further also added that the internship scheme will not only benefit the students by employment but also provide relief to the government in employing ground-level staff. Since this scheme is a perennial internship, the candidates can get an extra year extension based on their performance.
The application procedure, as well as selection, will be held online and there will be a board of examiners who will be present to select the eligible candidates. The entire supervision will be done by the chief secretary Mr. H.K. Dwivedi, Candidates who are not eligible for this year, will get a chance to prepare themselves for the next year, added the chief minister.
Mamata Banerjee on explaining the roles of the interns said that they would be trained from grass-roots levels. After the completion of the internship, the students will be given a government certificate with the ranks mentioned for them to get benefit in case of higher studies and further jobs in the private & public sector. This initiative comes as a relief for many especially due to the economic uncertainties linked to the Covid related economic slowdown.
As mentioned by one of the senior government officials, the details of the internships have not been mentioned till now, and the interns will help the government schemes to run on the floor. Reliable sources have traced that almost 30% of posts were vacant in the government offices. one of the senior officials dubiously said that the involvement of the interns in the official work won't be there as they cannot make them handle the confidential files of the government. They will be entitled to administrative work.

Mamata Banerjee also mentioned that the government had involved many civil volunteers in the police stations but when it comes to ground policing and administrative works, both are different. Like the civil volunteers who are a crucial part of the police department in and out, the interns similarly will also be crucial in the execution of the government schemes properly.
