7 IITs Aim at Modernising 5 Labs Each; To be at Par with the Best in the World

At the IIT Directors meet, Project Vishwajeet aimed at modernizing five laboratories each in seven IITs of the country. These labs will not only be equipped with the latest facilities, they will also be at par with the best in the world.

The laboratories at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in the following cities have received funding from the proposed Higher Education Finance Agency - directly from the industry and government. The ministry will be taking care of the implementation of the same.
- Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp)
- Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B)
- Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M)
- Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D)
- Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K)
- Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G)
- Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT-R)
On the other hand, IITs are also aiming at bringing the teacher-student ratio to 1:10 from the current 1:15. To achieve the same, the HRD ministry has asked IITs to hire faculty, including foreign faculty, for which the former is working towards easing the process.
Additional efforts are also being undertaken is to increase the student strength in IITs to one lakh, collectively at all levels - UG, PG and Ph.D. Entrance exams such as Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) etc. are being conducted in countries other than India as well.
The main objective of these initiatives is to improve the world ranking of these premier institutes of the country. Experts also believe that IITs should work towards improving themselves in terms of infrastructure, student-teacher ratio and expansion of the number of courses taught - including humanities.
