The latest decision taken by the Government of India is a boon to over 7.51 lakh teachers who are currently appointed in the central and state universities of the country. The government has decided to extend the benefits of seventh pay commission to the teachers after receiving recommendations from the UGC.

Minister of Human Resource and Development, Mr. Prakash Javadekar has made an official announcement in this regard. He revealed that the teachers of 43 central universities and other centrally funded deemed universities across the country will get the benefits of seventh pay commission. The Union Cabinet gave its approval to the proposal on June 28, 2017, after making about 34 amendments to the recommendations that were put forth.

While giving details, Javadekar highlighted the importance of attracting talent into the teaching profession and academics on a whole. The reason is to provide best facilities in terms of educators so that students and youth of the country do not feel the need to look to the west for higher studies. The associate and assistant professors working in 329 state universities and 12,912 colleges (from January 1, 2016) will also get the benefits of seventh pay commission. The pay hike for the teachers would range between Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 50,000.

Javadekar further explained that the implementation of seventh pay commission recommendations would incur over Rs. 30,748 crores annually. The estimated cost is higher than the actual cost (Rs. 29,300 crores) projected by the pay commission report. The additional Rs. 1,448 crore is applicable for the payment of allowances which the government has decided to retain against the suggestion/advice of the pay commission.

The decision to retain allowances was taken considering the specific functional requirements of scientific departments like Atomic energy and Space. The decision is expected to benefit over one-lakh employees working in these departments.
