Nearly 85% Students Not Equipped to Take Career Decisions Independently: Report

According to the recent survey conducted by Wheebox, a talent assessment company indicated that 85% Indian students in higher learning institutes are not able to take career decisions independently. The survey says that 50% students seek career-related decisions from college, 21% from web portals and internet and 17% students from family members. For students, career counselling has become a significant task for getting jobs. Career counselling should also involve interaction between talented job seekers and real people rather than resumes, explained the report.
Over 5,000 educational institutes took part in the survey. In many cases, students were of the opinion that internships play a positive role in gaining practical experience and they help in building strong career decisions. Contrastingly, a section of students expressed that Employer Connect/ Job Fairs are the best way to gain exposure to their preliminary job.

Over 14% of students feel that a good career start would land them in a bright career. On the other hand, 37% students were of the opinion that excellent communication skills will be an advantage to land up in a right job. Similarly, 49% students said that co-curricular activities and industry exposure are necessary for a great career.
Only a few institutes in India organise Employer Connect/ Job Fairs. These colleges invite professional career counsellors to their campuses and provide outstanding career counselling to students.

Higher learning institutes in developed countries organise career assessments where the personal discussion takes place between counsellors and students. Through this process, students will be able to make a right career decision.
Ministry of Labour and Employment has also set up Model Career Centres in India. It is the responsibility of the colleges to set up such centres to benefit the students, said by the report
