Today, most of the engineering students in India do not have the requisite skills for software development jobs. A recent study revealed that 95% engineering graduates are unfit for software development jobs. Most of these students do not possess basic skills that are required for these jobs. Only 4.77 percent of engineering students are able to write the correct logic for a programme, for instance.

Various software companies prefer to check the candidate’s capability of writing a correct logic for a given programme through a ‘Automata’ test. This is the basic requirement for software development jobs and Indian engineering graduates lag behind in this context. There is a large skill gap between the engineers trained in various technical institutes and the basic knowledge they possess that can land them a software industry job.

Recently, a study was conducted on around 36,000 engineering students who are pursuing various courses in Information Technology or IT branches in more than 500 colleges. After the study, it was revealed that only 4.77 percent students are capable of getting software development jobs as they possess the desired skills needed for employment.

Today, lack of knowledge in programming is affecting the data science and IT ecosystem adversely. It is time for India to catch up and develop the basic skills among students. As per the study, most of the technical institutes are failing to impart practical based approach while writing programmes and are relying on rote learning based approaches. This is one of the reasons behind the prevalent employability gap.

The study further indicated that if a practical based approach is adopted while writing the programmes, the students would understand the problems that are faced while coding which will further motivate them to find different solutions for it.

The study also observed that there are no proper qualified teachers for programming in most of the technical institutes. If the students have skills relating to programming jobs, they will have higher chances of being hired by reputed companies with attractive packages.
