98 Year Old Bihar Man Completes M.A. Economics from Nalanda Open University
- A 98-year-old man has set a Limca Book of Records by attaining his MA Economics postgraduate degree from Nalanda Open University.
- He has set an example for millions of people who use age as an excuse to give up on their dreams.
Mr. Raj Kumar Vaishya, aged 98 years, has surprised everyone by clearing the M.A Economics exam in second division from Patna’s Nalanda Open University (NOU). Born on April 1, 1920, in Uttar Pradesh, he completed his graduation from Agra University in the year 1938.
He failed to take up a postgraduate degree back then due to family responsibilities. However, finally, he fulfilled his long-cherished dream of becoming a postgraduate at the age of 98. With this achievement, Mr. Raj Kumar Vaishya proved that nothing is impossible if hard work is in place. Age is no bar in the path of fulfilling one's dreams and aspirations. Not to miss, he can read and write in English and Hindi without the use of spectacles at this age.

While elaborating on his achievement and spreading a positive message to the youth of the nation, Mr. Raj Kumar mentioned that one should never accept defeat. Instead, a person should understand that defeat marks the beginning of the success ladder. It is not a very good idea to worry and be depressed if one faces failure. Opportunities are available for everyone who believe in themselves, he added.
Sharing his experience about the preparations for the exams, Mr. Raj Kumar indicated that it was very difficult for him to wake up early in the morning to prepare for the exams. However, his zeal and enthusiasm to bag a postgraduate degree had driven him to achieve the same. He wrote the M.A Economics exam in English medium and took nearly two dozen answer sheets in each exam.

Mr. Raj Kumar Vaishya was recognised by the Limca Book of Records as the oldest man to apply for the postgraduate degree. In 2015, he enrolled for the M.A Economics course. He clarified that he does not have any plans to pursue a Ph.D.
As far as his professional career is concerned, he was associated with a private firm in Jharkhand for over three decades and retired in 1980. His career objective to take up Economics was to understand the problems and challenges faced by the people and society due to changing trends.
