Academicians and Students Upset as University of Mumbai Shuts Down BSc IT Course

The Bachelors in Science IT course is no longer available in the colleges under the University of Mumbai. The university has decided to no longer continue the BSc IT course as they now want to focus more on the post-graduate level courses. But the decision has not been accepted by most of the people like the students, parents and academicians. The course was introduced in the year 2001 and was one of the four courses launched during Mungekar Tenure.

On the basis of the data given by the Academic Council, the course has been popular and the number of students opting for this has been significantly growing. Earlier the University only had 30 colleges which offered this course but currently, the University has 205 colleges affiliated to it which provide BSc IT course. The Information Technology department said that the department needs to focus more on postgraduate education and research.

Bhalchandra Mungekar who is the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mumbai has written a letter to the authorities of the University asking them to reconsider their decision. He wrote that shutting down this course will have a negative effect on the student's career.

Mungekar was the Vice Chancellor for four years from the year 2000 to the year 2004 and he was also the member of the Planning Commission. The Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) has also said that the course should not be discontinued as the demand for it is growing. The current Vice-Chancellor of the University, Sanjay Deshmukh was not available for comment.
