After New UGC Guidelines, Colleges Affiliated to Calcutta University to Offer Ph.D. Courses
Colleges having post-graduate facilities, under Calcutta University will be able to offer Ph.D. programmes. But before that, they must fulfill some criteria as per the UGC guidelines.
Colleges with post-graduate facilities, and affiliated to Calcutta University will be able to offer Ph.D. programmes. But before that, they must fulfill certain criteria as per the UGC guidelines.
An official of the University said that colleges must have the necessary recognitions and accreditations. They should have adequate space for every research scholar. There should be computer facilities with uninterrupted water and power supply. Besides that, colleges intending to offer doctoral degrees must have libraries with latest books, e-journals, both Indian and international journals, adequate storage facilities and space.
Some other criteria that colleges must fulfill is as follows:
- Must have eligible research supervisors
- Supporting administrative facilities
- Required infrastructure
- Research promotion facilities
- Must have research laboratories permitted by the Centre/ state government
- At least two teachers or scientists with Ph.D.qualification in the department

In 2009, the University allowed few autonomous colleges with proper infrastructure to offer Ph.D. courses. These colleges were Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, St Xavier's College, Kolkata, Lady Brabourne College, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandir, and Bethune College.
Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, Ashutosh Ghosh said that the new regulations have been framed keeping in consideration the amended guidelines of UGC. Now, the number of Ph.D. candidates in the university can be increased. The number of college teachers working as supervisors will be also increased.

He further added that the affiliated colleges will now take initiatives to upgrade its infrastructure. The university will have full control over the colleges and there will be a strict monitoring of the process.
