The University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) was asked by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to reduce its intake of students by 10 percent from the next academic year. However, AICTE has revoked its decision of doing so and the university will admit students without any deduction in seats now.

The number of seats for undergraduate courses at UVCE is 550 and the number of postgraduate seats are 350 for the academic session of 2019-2020. The numbers will remain the same next year as well. The college is still facing the challenge of acute shortage of infrastructure and faculty and was perturbed after receiving a warning from the AICTE to reduce the intake of students by 10 percent.

The department of the State Higher Education has woken up to this crisis which has been pending for a long time and promised the Council that it will definitely fill all the faculty positions that are vacant by the end of August.

Officials have stated the assurance of the State Government for retaining the number of seats in the university. Students are admitted in various courses in the university through the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (K-CET) which will be held in the month of June.

Professor Venugopal KR, who is the Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University and also the principal of UVCE, said that AICTE has permitted all government colleges to conduct admissions according to the sanctioned seats. The State Government of Karnataka has agreed to fill up the vacant faculty positions. Hence, UVCE will not have any reduction in the number of seats for the intake of students.

A senior official of UVCE told that they have 175 faculty positions of which approval has been received for 97. Four of the approved faculty members have retired this year so that leaves them with only 93 working faculty members. The Government of the state of Karnataka will be filling up the remaining 77 seats by the end of August 2019.
