The Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Anil Sahasrabudhe, stressed the lack of collaboration among the premier institutes of the country. He said that it is needed to “attach strings” to the funding of all these institutes so as to make them undertake various collaborative programmes. According to him, it is the responsibility of the industries to associate themselves with academic institutes to enhance the employability and the teachers should be well equipped.

He said that there are some excellent institutions in Ahmedabad like Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A), Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGn), National Institute of Design (NID) etc. and in some other cities like Chandigarh, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Delhi as well. There are many institutes in every city of India that are reputed and flourishing well. These institutions should come together in collaboration and start thinking about all the future problems and their solutions.

The chairman said that these institutes should come up with ways to empower the citizens, create new jobs, and help in growing the economy. They should use their excellent facilities and share them with other institutes instead of working in silos as that will prove to be highly beneficial.

Anil Sahasrabudhe further said that they need to develop models in which the funding by any agency, be it the State Government, the Department of Science and Technology, the HRD Ministry, or the AICTE, must have strings attached that unless the body receiving the funding collaborates with any other five institutions they will not be given the funding.

Sahasrabudhe also proposed summer collaborations by the students and faculty of these institutes so as to help in creating a new generation of startups and entrepreneurs. He said that electives in the area of entrepreneurship are being encouraged as a part of the startup policy made by the Union Government. These electives can be the creation of business plans, in terms of economy, market survey, ways to go ahead with the development of the product to actually getting the funding and then starting with the entrepreneurship research.
