As a plan of action to deal with the problem of infrastructure and staff shortage in Government Engineering Colleges in Karnataka, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to cut seats in these colleges. The Karnataka Government has solicited time of two years from the council for the same.

This problem is not only being faced by the engineering colleges in Karnataka but also in other states as well. To overcome the problem, the Council came up with the decision to reduce 40,000 seats in the government-funded technical colleges across the country in February.

According to the Additional Chief Secretary of Karnataka Government, Mr. B.H. Anil Kumar, the principals of Polytechnic and Engineering Colleges of Karnataka faced difficulties during the review meeting that was held by AICTE in Bangalore. To bring the problem to light, he wrote to the chairman of AICTE, Mr. Anil Sahasrabudhe mentioning the same. On this, the chairman agreed that the principals were not given ample time to explain before the Standing Appeal Committee (SAC) and the reviews were also not satisfactory as per the compliance they submitted to the deficiencies.

The technical institutions were established by the Karnataka Government to provide quality education to the poor, rural and meritorious students. The problem of not fixing the staff shortage and ramping up infrastructure was brought up by the CM of Karnataka during his speech while announcing the Budget 2019-20. According to him, the budget covers the construction of new buildings, procurement of equipment and upgradation of the engineering & technical colleges by allocating ₹242 crore, ₹27.41 crore and ₹19.56 crore to the projects respectively.
