AICTE has introduced a regulation basis which admission to all engineering colleges across India will be done on the basis of a single entrance examination from 2018. The regulation for single engineering entrance test was approved on Tuesday, March 14, 2017.
AICTE – the regulatory body for technical education in India – has also asked the institutes to start induction programmes and revise the curriculum on a yearly basis. It has also directed the institutes to train teachers through the SWAYAM platform. Rs.250 crore will be granted for the implementation of these reforms.
The single entrance exam will do away with all the multiple entrance tests conducted by various central bodies, state governments and private institutions.

According to sources, AICTE will soon issue a gazette notification once the regulation is approved by the HRD Ministry. It is also being said that the entrance exam for engineering and architecture programmes will be structured on the lines of NEET.
Students aspiring to take admission in either of the Indian Institutes of Technology will have to clear JEE-Advanced apart from clearing this single entrance exam.
AICTE is working to come up with an exam that is diverse in terms of language. The body is also planning to conduct this exam multiple times a year. The exam will be mandatory for admission to all engineering programmes. Colleges of all the states will have to follow the regulations or they will lose their AICTE approval.
