Apart from Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the Government of India is planning to give more autonomy to some of the popular and top performing b-schools in the country like S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research – Mumbai and XLRI Jamshedpur. These institutes are likely to get more autonomy in deciding their curriculum, fee structure and admission policy. The motive of the government is to recognise the performance of these institutes so that they can perform better.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is likely to convene a meeting soon to take a call on the exact nature of the autonomy of the b-schools which offer PGDM (Postgraduate Diploma in Management) course. At present, there are more than 400 such business schools in India, many of which are highly regarded as the older IIMs.

According to official information disclosed by AICTE, b-schools will be given a grade either - ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ after careful assessment of each based on the following set of criteria: -

  • Internationalisation and Outreach Programmes
  • Accreditation
  • Consulting and Learning Programmes
  • Executive Education
  • Research
  • Graduation Outcomes
  • Learning
  • Teaching
  • Leadership

The level of autonomy that these b-schools get will depend on their grades. The ‘A’ graded management institute will be given maximum autonomy. As a practice, top b-schools that offer PGDM course admit students based on their CAT score. However, with an ‘A’ grade, the institute will have the authority to conduct independent entrance test to fill its seats. Alternatively, an institute with a ‘B’ grade will have the autonomy to fill only a fewer number of seats basis its own entrance test while the rest will have to be filled based on the management entrance exams like CAT.

AICTE is planning to implement the process of grading b-schools from the next academic session.

A top official associated with XLRI Jamshedpur hailed the move while stating that the institute is looking forward to getting more autonomy.
