A panel constituted by AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) has recommended changes to the way engineering students are tested in technical institutes across the country. The new process will be along the lines of the existing testing system in premier engineering institutes like NITs and IITs. Usually, the students in these premier institutes are not exposed to the theoretical part of the subject. Instead, more emphasis will be given to analysis and quantitative problems.

Earlier this year, AICTE constituted a committee on exam reforms comprising of experts from varied fields. The committee submitted its draft report last week. Over 3,500 engineering institutes are functioning under the ambit of AICTE.

A top official of AICTE revealed that a meeting would be conducted on March 05, 2018 told discussions on the report submitted by the committee. Vice Chancellors of technical universities, officials of the Directorate of Technical Education, Deans and Teachers will attend the meeting to give their feedback and opinions on the draft report, he said.

According to sources, the committee has also recommended numerous measures including the focus on training, projects and situational questions. The existing system of education in technical institutes promotes rote-learning and lacks critical thinking of the students. The current system also gives more emphasis on testing the subject knowledge of the student.

The report submitted by the committee also included model question papers prepared along the lines of the new method. AICTE is hoping for a better outcome through the new method of testing the students.
