The AICTE has decided to revise the syllabus of various engineering courses offered by colleges across India. The step has been taken to upgrade the curriculum to meet the industry standards. A committee of subject experts has been appointed by AICTE to review the current syllabi, and recommend necessary changes.

These changes will be implemented for technical and engineering colleges across the country apart from IITs and NITs. AICTE aims to improve employability of engineers by subjecting them to an advanced and pro-industry curriculum.

In order to update the syllabus, the institutes have been asked to appoint subject-wise industry consultation committees (ICCs) every year. Recommendations of these committees will be implemented on curriculum.

So far, the syllabus followed by these technical colleges have been prepared on the basis of the model curriculum designed by AICTE. For the first time in 9 years, a committee has been appointed to recommend changes in the syllabus that will be implemented from the session 2018.

The committee comprises of sub-groups with subject experts from different fields. each group is led by an IIT professor. All the changes will be made after consultations with the industry.

A senior HRD Ministry official said that technical and engineering domains advance at a very fast rate therefore there is a constant need of reviewing the syllabus for different technical courses. Teaching old concepts prevent students from getting good jobs in their fields, he added.
