Student Enrollment in B.Tech and M.Tech courses in almost all the states faced one of the worst crisis in history in 2019. The enrollment rate is very low for engineering course admissions through national and state level entrance tests in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and more. Some states have seen more than 50% vacant seats in 2019 admissions for B.Tech.

However, according to the recent data, it is not only the undergraduate level B.Tech and B.E. engineering courses which have taken a hit. The same scenario is being noticed in the students' enrolment statistics in M.Tech. On 22nd September, the alarming statistics have been released by the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE).

According to AISHE, it has been seen that the enrolment in the B.Tech dropped by 11% in 2018-19 from the normal rate of 9% fluctuation each year. The enrolments in M.Tech courses dropped by almost half. In 2014-15, 2,89,311 enrolled for M.Tech while in 2018-19, the number has gone down to 1,35,500.

On the other hand, there have been a significant increase in the MBA and B.Ed course enrolments in the 2018-19 session compared to 2014-19. The enrolment in MBA courses increased by more than 50,000 students, B.Ed saw a jump by about 80%.

From 2014 onwards, the number of students enrolled in professional courses decreased roughly by 9%. 11% is an abnormal dip in the courses. The statistics of State-Wise admissions are already in the hand of the states and they have cited different reasons for the dip. A total of 27,022 engineering seats are vacant in Karnataka, Government colleges blame private colleges and private colleges in Karnataka blamed the industry.

Tamil Nadu Engineering vacant seats touched 89,000 and experts blamed the mushrooming private institutes as well. The lack of job and industry trends are the reasons stated by the officials in Odisha where 80% of engineering seats are vacant. The council of private universities in West Bengal held a meeting to change the WBJEE Policies to address the vacant seat problems.
