AISHE Report: Enrollment in Engineering Courses Witness a Decline
The AISHE report for 2017-18 reveals that there has been a decline in the enrolment of engineering courses and there is a low enrolment of girl students in the institutes of eminence. However, the enrollment has improved in the courses like B.Sc.
Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has released the AISHE report for the 2017-18 academic year. AISHE reports provide an insight into the academic trends in the country in the past few years.
The highlight of the AISHE report this year is the low enrolment of girl students in the institutes of eminence. Apart from this, the report also indicates that engineering programmes are no more a favourite choice among science stream students for undergraduate courses.
Enrollment in UG Courses:
A steep decline has been observed in the regular B.Tech programme for the past five years while the enrolment in the B.Sc programme has increased.
Undergraduate Course | Enrollment in 2013-14 | Enrollment in 2017-18 |
B.Tech/B.E. | 43,36,149 | 39,40,080 |
B.Sc | 35,79,526 | 51,38,250 |
B.Ed | 5,59,028 | 10,14,882 |
BBA | 3,17,024 | 4,24,785 |
B.Com | 31,17,265 | 35,48,572 |
The above table indicates the trend in the enrollment of B.Tech/B.E. and B.Sc programmes in the past five years. Some other courses such as B.Ed and BBA have also witnessed a constant upward trend. More and more students are opting for such courses rather than just focusing on engineering and other streams which dominated the higher education domain ten years ago. B.Com has also witnessed more enrolments in the past five years. The shift in the interest is because of the more relevant growth and employment opportunities offered to students which was not the case five years ago.

However, the enrolment ratio in the course like Bachelor of Arts has gone down. There has been a sharp decline in the ratio from the past three years.
