AISHE Report: Only 19.4% Pursue PhD after Completing PG In Science

Only 19.4% of Science students pursue a PhD after completing their Master's as per the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE). The report also mentions the exact number of student enrolment in India across all colleges and universities.

According to the analysis of All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), only 19.4% of the Science students pursue PhD after completing their Master's. There is such low enthusiasm among the Science students for pursuing PhD in India. There is even lesser participation when it comes to subjects such as medical science and social science as only 15.5% of medical science students and 6.1% of social science students go for PhD after pursuing their postgraduate level studies.

The report also gives an exact number of the student enrolment in India in all universities and colleges on different levels such as UG, PG, UG Diploma, PG Diploma, Certificate, Integrated, PhD and M.Phil. As per AISHE, a total number of 44702 science students had enrolled in PhD and the highest enrolment was in Chemistry and then in Physics and Mathematics. In Zoology, 2397, in Botany, 2487 and in BioScience, there are 1952 students who have enrolled in PhD.

In Agriculture and Allied courses, 52.9% of students go for PhD after completing their PG and in Engineering and Technolgy courses, there are 56.5% of the students enrolling for PhD.

As per the AISHE report, in 2018-19 there are 1,69,170 students enrolled in PhD and this is even less than 0.5% of the total student enrollment. Roughly 3,880 students enrolled for the Integrated PhD. The number of students who were awarded PhD degrees during 2018 is 40,813. Out of this, only 23, 765 were males and 17,048 are were females.

Those who pursue PhD opt for State Public University as compared to deemed university and other state private universities. According to the AISHE report, the chunk of PhD student is highest in State Public University (34.3%) followed by the Institutes of National Importance (21.6%) and Deemed University-Private (21.6%) and State Private University (13.4%).
